I heard about this a long time ago. I had no idea it had progressed to an actual running engine in a car. So cool! Not that Toyman isn't just that this is.

There needs to be more detail of that flywheel gearbox transmission contraption. It also needs be be ran at a track near me so I can see it in person

So when can we see it move in anger?

Meh. Looks pretty normal to me.

The thread has all kinds of details about the drivetrain, but I'll summarize: 540 cubic inch 5 cylinder radial Kinner aircraft engine with a Ford diesel flywheel, it has a Triton V10 trigger ring behind the flywheel for the Megasquirt pickup. The throttle bodies were off some sort of motorcycle, IIRC.

The flywheel has a BMW guibo coupling which connects it to a Mitsubishi 3000 GT transfer box which has been flipped to get the rotation correct. That has a double Cardan joint driveshaft without the centering ball which connects it to a Gold Wing final drive.

Thw 'Wing final drive goes to the remains of what he called the 'angry hamster box' which is used to mount a flywheel/clutch assembly that IIRC is from a Subaru. The clutch then feeds power to a Subaru transaxle and thence to the wheels.

It used to have two sprockets that transmitted power to the angry hamster box and the starter was on that gearbox. It lasted, IIRC, two laps. He also was using a bicycle chain to drive the alternator and the vids he posted had all KINDS of whirring and rattling noises going on with all those chains and crap.

Video from the first Gingerman race: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LXx31VhyCw That's where the chain drive gave up and he's been trying to whip it back into shape ever since.

It turns out he is on the neighborhood board.

Yea. Like I said, he seems to be thinking pretty straight. I always thought an 'angry hamster box' was something else, but yea, pretty normal guy there.

Sorry, I should have warned y'all. Reading that thread is a lot like reading the one about the kid crossing the US on the Honda Cub.

If you really wanna kill some time you can read about the guy who rode around the world on a Harley Chopper.

Thanks for the compliments guys :)

it took a bit to find this thread but you guys have about 1/3rd of the views on that video at the top of this thread.

I'll happily answer any questions you have, the summary up there is pretty good but i can add a bit to it.

the flywheel is cummins turbo diesel because it's balanced. the 7.3L flywheel was abandoned when i realized it wasn't. the starter is from the same application.

the "angry hamster box" is named that because it came from here (they gave it to me since they weren't using it anymore): http://jalopnik.com/5408114/angry-hamster-racing-honda-z600

i made a new output shaft and a new back half of the box to mate to the subi flywheel. here's the side you don't see in the video:

of course, what is left of it now includes none of the original components anymore. but it's still a neat name :)

and here's a decent shot of the last drivetrain setup:

and the original trigger wheel setup:

the tab on the chain is the cam pulse. the chain is exactly twice as long as the sprocket. the alternator is a convenient idler.

the only issue with that trigger wheel setup is the whole crank walks back and forth on this motor about 50-70thou. so i switched to a different trigger setup:

triton v10 wheel:

diypnp sensor

for the cam i used the same sensor detecting the bearing on the #1 cylinder's exhaust rocker:

rock solid sync.

Bonus points for using a MR2. (I am admittedly biased).

Although, I think it probably had more to do with "what can I stick this motor in that won't impede my forward vision", than the awesomeness the chosen chassis.

In reply to Matt B:

i'd say it has to do with the MR2's being awesome. i own a few of them

from left to right: 1)2gr-fe (3.5L V6) I'm the guy that makes the swap kits for the MR2s

2)no motor, probably going to be a V8 project

3)the awesome 540 cubic inch WWII radial

4)2.5L 2ar-fe with the new 6 speed out of a camry. this was a 1 week swap. did it to take it racing. motor is amazingly durrable, more than i can say for the transmission.

since then i bought a different MKI chassis to replace the far right one. the chassis was falling apart from the racing.

Hey! I think I saw your for-sale thread for that 2ar-fe setup over on mr2oc.com (thirdvector over there). Very cool setup, with a quite a bit of fab work to get all the linkages correct iirc. I'd love to replicate that in my mk1 one day, but I doubt I'd have the skills or patience.

the 2ar was rather thrown together to be honest. but it works quite well and it's very reliable.

for the right price (not that high) i'd sell that project in a running state and you could swap it into a daily driver. or just drive the car as-is. it's titled and has 2 seats and much of it's interior still.
