Hey I knew that 30+ years ago when I lived in Alabama.
BTW, its amazing how high an armadildo can jump straight up.
The article states that the disease is spread through saliva. I don't think I want to know what led to those people contracting leprosy from armadillos.
I recently had an armadillo run over my foot and scratch the skin with his big digging claws.
My fault
1) I suppose flip flops are not proper footware for hiking in the woods
2) while fun, startle-the-armadillo is probably not the smartest game to play
Those things are great in the crock pot. Keep them in their shells to preserve the juices, drain after 4 hours and then add your favorite BBQ sauce. Just like pulled pork but better.
Around here, all we have to worry about is prairie dogs with bubonic plague. I cannot comment on how they taste, but they sure make the road slippery if you get enough of them.
Since it's a bacteria, I'd say you can't catch it from the cooked meat. Just like you can't contract rabies from cooked meat.
But, converting it from a dead animal to meat... be carefull.
