I'll put "Hunky Dory" in my Top 10 Rock Albums of All Time. I had the opportunity to see Bowie live in about '82 and even though the show was quite thoroughly scripted, it was still a great time. Sorry to hear of his illness and death.

There are few musicians who can legitimately be called artists. Bowie was an artist. In music, film, and even fashion---- he was a game-changer.

Bowie influenced nearly everyone. He changed the way we think and listen to music, and he never lost his passion for trying new things, and expanding his horizons. His muse never left him.

When I was a kid, I remember my grandmother telling me that the worst thing about getting older is that your childhood heros die. I now understand what she meant.

Born David Jones.......he changed his name so he wouldn't be confused with the Monkey (Davey Jones) who was popular when Bowie was getting started. He surpassed the Monkey's fame....... about a million times over!

Yeah, I listened the E36 M3 out of some David Bowie back in the 80's. In fact "our song" at our wedding was "Tonight," a duet with Tina Turner. For some reason my wife thought it was a better choice than the live version of Stigmata by Ministry.

Actually, I read not long ago how Iggy Pop was pretty serious about fitness and working out. Not that working out can stop cancer, cancer really sucks.

When I saw Henry Rollins doing his spoken-word thing, he related an anecdote about Iggy thoroughly besting him in an on-stage battle of physical fitness and endurance. This was during the Rollins Band days.

Before fame he worked on the Mini line.

A chrome-plated Mini design by rock icon David Bowie for the 40th anniversary of the car in 1999.

Luther Vandross is one of the background singers.

RIP Mr. Bowie. Often imitated, never duplicated.

On a sidenote, two of his albums were recorded in the Philadelphia area. His first live album was recorded at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby and Young Americans was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios. The studio has been demolished and I believe Drexel University has the reels in its archives.

Funny, in a punk bio talking about the scene around the early/mid seventies there was a quote about Bowie being a folk singer hanging around the sex pistols and Siouxie Sioux until he saw the changes in the wind and reinvented himself.

RIP

The Pistols weren't even founded until 1975. Considering Bowie's "folk" era (such as it was) can be argued to have ended around 1971, and Ziggy Stardust was released in 1972, I'm having a hard time believing that. I can't really see Johnny Rotten having been much of an influence on Bowie at age 13.

But I can see Johnny Rotten THINKING that.
