Supposed to be driving 1300 miles to NY state for a new job today, transmission E36 M3 the bed. I'm in deep kimchi and would be happy for any leads

Try car-part.com for finding one. Even if you find one today, you're not traveling 1300 miles with it tomorrow.
I've always avoided Subarus just for the random exploding parts thing but now I realize I'm committed to driving one up north in a couple of weeks. We'll see if I fall in love or not.
I had random exploding auto transmissions in my SVX but the "glass" WRX 5 speed swapped in took a number of launches without issues when I ran it in autocross in Detroit. No full throttle clutch drops but the SVX had more mass than the WRX.

They're noisy, rattly E36 M3 boxes. I love mine, but I have a stock drivetrain, a turbo and a manual transmission which negates most of the issues people complain about.
Good luck Jim. I've never owned a Subaru, but my brother (not a car guy at all) had one. I was a huge fan of how easy it was to work on.
The trans in my car crapped out before I even left Montgomery, so I borrowed a truck and trailer, loaded the car and found a Subaru breaker in Athens Al that would swap it so drove 3 hours and they started at about 2. 10:00 test drive, clutch slips. I suggest its the clutch fork he swapped because i had read about it, he said "highly doubt it, needs a new clutch" at 11pm and sent his help home.
He and I pulled the AWD trans back out replaced the clutch and put it all back together.
Clutch slips.
I pulled the top mount intercooler off and checked the clutch fork.....bingo, it was not on right.
Left Athens at 3:30 am and drove 600+ miles on no sleep and got to Pennsylvania before I stopped for the night.
In New York now about 4 hours from Ogdensburg with no power steering (a side effect of the swap? Coincidence?)
