Are you looking specifically for an ls1, or would a 5.3 do?

In reply to roadsportusa :

LS1s are stupid expensive nowadays.  L33s (truck aluminum 5.3) are pretty expensive too.  The engine in the '03ish Ranier (forget the engine code) is also an all aluminum 5.3, but it has not so good heads and a weird oil pan so it is basically worthless used.  You can get different oil pans for less than difference in price compared to an L33, and you could buy both for what an LS1 goes for and have money left over.

Someone will now chime in on how they just bought a complete LS1 for $500 because the guy selling it didn't know what he had.  Going rate anymore seems to be $2500-3000.

Pretty sure that would be an LM4, for all aluminum block and 5.3

That's the one.  I remember now it also has weaker rods (apparently), so if you are planning on making a lot more than stock power, then acquiring an L33 makes more sense, because once you buy an LM4 and better rods, you are close to having an L33 that also has better heads and may have an oil pan suitable for your purposes..

LC9 from the NNBS trucks is all aluminum and has the stronger Gen4 rods and sought after 799 heads.

L33's are great!

aluminum block, best cathedral port head, ls2 style strong rods. You can pick them up for $800-1400 complete around where I live.
