Most of the tanks I've seen are designed to be low and flat, I need one that's more vertically oriented to fit in the space I have available, in the front of a Mini between the uprights and not too wide or deep (front to back). 10 gallons would do it, I could get by with 8.....

If I can't find a reasonably priced fuel cell or fuel tank that will fit the space I may have to weld up my own, but I'd sure prefer the easy button.

When I look at Summit Racing for example, while they offer what seems like thousands of fuel cells, after paging thru a few hundred they all seem to follow the same patterns, and their search function doesn't seem helpful. I understand why race oriented fuel cells would prefer to be low and flat, but there must be other cars that require a different shape to fit space available?

It doesn't have to be a fuel cell, just a properly shaped gas tank would work as it's not a track car....but I wouldn't mind the added safety of a fuel cell .

Dimensions that would work - 18-20" wide, same height and 8-10" deep, smaller than that would be even better, less deep is more helpful that shorter or narrower......I'm not good at math so I don't know how many gallons the smaller of those dimensions would provide so someone with more smarts wants to weigh in I'd appreciate it!

18" x 18" x 8" = ~11 gallons.

How many gallons would be acceptable?

Older pickup trucks had tall, skinny tanks that mounted behind the seat.  Maybe something like that?  or maybe a fuel cell designed for that application?

Here's one for Jeeps, 18 gallons, might be able to find somethign smaller:

In reply to Slippery :

8-10 gallons is plenty, slightly shorter than 18" would work fine, the 8" wide is good....so maybe 18 wide, 16 tall and 8 deep are what I'm shooting for?

The math is like this:

18 in x 18 in x 8 in = 2592 in^3 / 231 = 11.2 gallons

18 x 16 x 8 = 2304 / 231 = 9.9 gal

An option, easy but likely more expensive:

A search for "custom fuel cells" pulls up a few other options

Out of stock, but an option:

Thanks, I guess the key thing I didn't know was how many cubic inches in a gallon

I also found an outfit in Ca that says they make custom tanks so I sent them and the Pyrotect folks both a note asking for a quote. I have a feeling the Pyrotect folks will be way more money than I can spend for this but thanks for the links!

Have you tried eBay?  Search for 8 & 10 gallon fuel cells, most list exterior dimensions.  A stock tank is going to be the cheapest option.

Pyrotect called back and said anything they could do would be really expensive as a one off - I was pleased that they took the time to call.

Yes actually, I spent quite a bit of time on there.....most everything on offer is designed to sit flat under a trunk or back seat, where I need it to stand up so to speak. All the ones that go behind the seat like in a 70's pick up truck are way too big.

If you can't find exactly what you need, maybe start with something like this, cut it and weld it back together:

Now that's what I'm talking about....I can't weld aluminum but I know someone who can, we could slice a chunk out and weld it right back to make it short enough. Good find!

If I made it 20" long it would be right at 10 gallons - perfect.

Thanks for that link!
