My daily is a 2014 320i. It just turned 200k a couple of weeks ago and to celebrate it gave me a drivetrain malfunction warning. Other than the limp-mode reduced power, it runs/drives fine. I bought it at 100k and it has only needed oil, brakes, and a leaking valve cover replaced. It has been far more trouble free than I expected a high-mileage BMW to be. A recent oil leak at the cooler housing needs attention but I'd like to address the drivetrain malfuntion and CEL first.

Can a guy get his hands on ISTA software via legitimate channels for reasonable money? It pains me to have to take it to a shop for diagnosis but I am not a fan of just blindly throwing parts.

I see the following codes:

123401 - Electric Wastegate, Stroke-Learning Malfunction.

123432 - Electric Wastegate, Stroke-Learning beyond valid range

CD8F01 - LIN, Communication (Intelligent Battery Sensor) is missing

P0172 - System Too Rich (Bank 1)

118002 - Mixture Control. Mixture Too Rich.

123401 & 123432 point to the electric wastegate actuator. Before I parts cannon it, I would like to use ISTA to perform the calibration procedure. The actuator cycles as it should at startup and the wastegate moves as it should.

CD8F01 has been present for a couple of years. A body shop pointed it out after a deer hit repair. I intended to replace the ground cable/IBS but sorta forgot since there were no issues and no CEL.

P0172 & 118002 are new and lighting a CEL. I cleaned the MAF sensor with no change. I've done some reading that suggests the high pressure fuel pump could be the culprit. The theory is that it is leaking fuel into the oil and then those fuel vapors are getting sucked into the intake via PCV. It was due anyway so I changed the oil - I don't detect any fuel smell. At this point, without additional clarity, it's a parts cannon situation. I'd start with the MAF, maybe look at 02 sensors, and maybe even the HPFP. I'm hopeful that ISTA can pinpoint the issue.

It last got plugs at 50k and was on the original coils. I had ordered them a while back and decided to change them when I did the oil just to rule out variables. With no ignition/misfire codes it wasn't surprising that it didn't help.

Any troubleshooting suggestions or leads to acquire ISTA software would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

I believe this is where you can get buy temporary ISTA subscriptions as well as service procedures: https://bmwtechinfo.bmwgroup.com/#/login

I bought a cable from amazon...they can vary over different model years. That being said, depending on your definition of "reasonable money" and feelings about Right to Repair there are unlicensed versions of ISTA a quick google search away.
