My garage is a disaster. It has been a perpetual disaster since I moved in. It literally stresses me out, which sucks, because it's an awesome size and I should love it. So I am going to work on it every day this month, even if it's only for a few minutes (as inspired by AAZCD). In October I spent every day working on a huge model project and made insane progress, so I know I can make a ton of progress by chipping away.

Here's how it starts:

Will watch soon.  Looking forward to seeing what you do.  I have a garage myself now and it needs love & organization so I'm looking for good ideas.

Day 2 start:

I managed to find the radio code, put the helmets away, and uncover the Boxster. Detail towels are in the wash and I have an HJC M2010 helmet and 2 Audi shifter surrounds to put on eBay. I got the jacks and stands put away and the jump box.

After:

Also put the new registrations in the Boxster and Audi and the owners manual back in the Boxster. I am really good at not putting stuff back where it belongs apparently.

Day 3:

I found the workbench top!!

Day 4:

I spent a lot of time today organizing and putting things back where they belong. Turns out I have a lot of uninstalled parts hanging around, so I made a Boxster box and an Audi box to put them all in. I also started my GRM New Years box...

No peaking!! I actually went to another spot in the garage and threw away a bunch of trash and gathered up the recycling just to get somewhere.

Half of that table is full of Mazda5 parts... I  dunno what to do about that yet. Then I moved to the Danger Box and got it somewhat put back together.

It's been a productive day. I also packed up the radio for Danny.

Problem with cleaning the garage is, you find all the cool stuff you forgot about and spend your time playing with it instead of cleaning.

Oh snap, you're garage was already clean by my standards. I'm too ashamed to take pictures of my mess.

seriously, though, good goal. I should do the same.

Part of the process should involve building and mounting shelving units, cabinets and /or shelves.

and if that were my place I would finish the drywall and paint.  It is so so so close.  The hard work is done.  In one day you could have the walls looking amazing.

Today's progress:

I feel like I might have gone backwards here with covering up the bench, but it's honestly too high to do anything with and it's a good spot to store the car parts. Now we have a spot for Flex parts and 944 parts.

Yes, I need to make a huge recycling run (we don't have curbside which sucks) but look! Take away the recycling and the floor there is like clear!! I can get to the flooring for the house again!

Lots more work in this corner. Notice that you can start to see the table. I also got all the hooks on the pegboard and figured out that race ramps are super easy to hang up high. Underneath the paint box is the Mazda5 parts. Gotta do something with all of it!

Looking good!  It's nice to know I'm not the only one who struggles with this.

Realistically, any progress I can make on the place where I work on my projects is every bit as valuable as actually working on the projects.  Sometimes more so.

Good work!  Looking forward to seeing more.

No cabinets. Shelves only.

You can take that mess of a thing you were getting frustrated with, shove it in a cabinet, close the door and forget about it until all your cabinets are full.

A shelf makes you look at it and deal with it because it's out in the open.

I learned that I need shelves only a long time ago.

In reply to ShawnG :

The cabinets are full of food and will stay that way. They are going to move and have the chest freezer under them.

Everything else is shelves though because you're right.

Today's progress:

I started sacrificing boxes, which is hard. You never know when you're going to need a good box!

That allowed me to uncover the car seat, which was expired by 2 years, and throw it away. That in turn uncovered the blasting tank which I was able to fill with one of the 2 bags of walnut shell grounds.

I also fixed a car by proxy today. Danny got the radio and it worked in his Boxster!

I have cabinets for some stuff. Rattle cans and tape is one. Few other cabinets for dedicated specific things. But mostly open shelves for that very reasoncheeky

Today was a tough day and not as much progress was made.

I packed 3 boxes and broke down some more. Also threw another bag of packing paper into the recycling.

I also listed the Audi's stock front brakes for sale. Tomorrow I make a recycling run and shoot a video.

Don't pop those air pillows.

I'm pretty sure that's how China is solving it's air pollution problem.

Great progress! It's a constant battle.

I'm currently parting out the second car in a month, so the pile of parts and mess is getting to me. On top of all the other crap in my garage that is still finding it's home.

Well yesterday was a bust. Covid test, 103.1* temp, 2 urgent care trips, 3 stitches, and an x-ray were all things I had to manage. So I counted my run to the recycling center as my 15 minutes and went to bed.

Today was slightly less eventful, so I got some work done.

I found a shelf! And more importantly, an electrical outlet, which are surprisingly hard to come by in this garage. Now I'm thinking of putting the chest freezer and drink fridge there. We'll see.

I got the kid stuff all on one shelf. I have another shelf of PC stuff to get rid of. This whole shelf unit itself honestly needs to go, it's crappy.

Filled up a bag of trash and a bag of recycling.

I also found a bunch of automotive books and stuff. These I need to get rid of (any Tifosi in the house?), but I also found a 944 brochure (and stuck it with the S2 stuff), an FB RX7 brochure (giving to a friend that races them), a 68 AMC brochure (giving to my dad), and a whole collection of Hemming's Muscle Machines back to issue #1 (no idea what to do with).

In reply to Javelin (Forum Supporter) :

I understand the pain of giving up good boxes! To save on precious space, when I get a good box, I measure it, break it down carefully for reuse by cutting packing tape, then note the dimensions on the upper right corner, and file them vertically (flattened down) next to the scale, packing tape, tape measure, and label printer in my eBay area. I split them into biggest dimension under a foot in one stack, and biggest dimension bigger than a foot on the other side, with both stacks in rough size order.
Yes, my packing tape costs went up a little bit, but I gained a huge amount of space, and now boxing is quick and easy while I'm creating the listing. Measure item, thumb through boxes, tape a box together, and pack. I keep a big bag of bubble wrap and assorted padding. Refill when low from incoming purchases, and recycle/toss excess wads of paper, peanuts, etc when full.

Active listings are already boxed as they go live and move to the outgoing shelf. Once sold, get paid, print a label, ???, profit! YMMV but I've found this approach keeps me organized and keeps the cardboard hoarding to a minimum.

Final tip: get 1-2 big boxes like a bicycle box from a bike shop (I'm in Portland and can arrange for some at my store if you want to pick up) or appliance boxes from the appliance store. Flatten the big box and tuck it behind a shelf against the wall. If you end up with something big, odd-sized, or just don't have the right box, make one out of your huge cardboard sheets, and replenish when used up with another big box.

Today was a day. Worked all day and then after school stuff with 2 of the kids. So we took the S2 out for the first time in months!

I also paid for a driver's side cat and a set of wind screens for the Boxster from AAZCD. And I cleaned some too!
