Need a tall steel locking cabinet.
Free standing.
Lockable.
Decently sturdy, but I wont be storing anything too heavy.
Will not be used heavily. More long term storage. Occasionally open it and get something out, then close it up for another few months.
Looking at:
Husky: $355 to my door
Crafstman (Lowes): $319 to my door
Amazon options: So many, but seem to be as low around $200. No solid brand I can recognize though.
The hammer store doesn't sell any large cabinets??
Main concern is I don't want to have some hatefully flimsy piece of crap. Also don't want it to be a complete nightmare to assemble.
Those gun safes look cool - is that overkill?
Check out what might be available at a local used office furniture place.
I have two amazing locking steel cabinets, one far heavier than the other, but both in a different league from anything at Lowe's/HD.
One free from a building we were about to demo. Was holding janitorial supplies. The other $50 off of marketplace from someone's garage who said they got it from a machine shop.
I'd definitely second the recommendation to look used for something that was targeted to a commercial application.
I'll check around, but I honestly cant devote a lot of time to searching for one and I have no vehicle capable of carrying one. I know at work we have a facility being shut down so I'll keep an eye out for what they are liquidating in the future.
For now though, does anyone have any recommendations on something I can have delivered to my door? Just go with Lowes or HD and return it if it sucks?
Northern Tool has what you're looking for, but they are industrial quality and priced to match - although not far off from similar (fully welded; shipped assembled) cabinets from Home Depot.
One recommendation - during assembly, bolt some wheels to the bottom. It's nice to be able to move the cabinet I have in the basement around once in awhile.
I have not used this specific cabinet but the bench that goes with it is pretty impressive. They are made by Seville Classics. Available at Sam's and online. I have my lathe on the bench. Linky.
This is the bench. It's 8-10 years old with about 800 pounds in it and it is holding up very well.
I've been checking out hose Seville classics but hadn't seen anyone with firsthand experience. Thanks toyman!
I've had this Seville rolling box for several years. Very good quality.
Thanks for the recommendation. That looks good, glad to hear some positive experience from GRMers.
I have 4 of the Seville cabinets in my shop from Sams club and another one in my office. They've been really good, only caveat I would put on them is when you're assembling them, assemble them loosely and then make sure everything is square when you tighten it up. I did on my first 3 and they're great, the last two I didn't do as good of a job and the doors aren't quite square. They've held up to quite a bit of abuse although the powder coating failed on a shelf in one of the cabinets where I had a solvent leak (not a shock). I would buy more of them especially at their price.
Looks like I bought them back in Nov 2018 so I've had them for about 5 years. You can spot I started to rush through my assembly at some point.. Still going strong today though.
Earlier this year.
Look around on Marketplace for Strong Hold cabinets, they are very heavy and very solid/secure. Buddy of mine has a few and he found all of them on marketplace over the years. Think he paid $200-500 each depending on size and condition. I've been watching marketplace hoping to find one or two for myself.
I've got a HON cabinet that I found on Marketplace for $50 that a guy had in his garage. Nowhere near as heavy, solid as a Strong Hold but it's a good cabinet for the $50 I paid.
I have the Husky one. It is filled with paint (both 5 gal. and 1 gal.), oil, cleaning products, etc.
No complaints, would buy another.
