I have a horrible freight flux core welder I got from a buddy. Its messy but surprisingly more often than not it does the job.
It had a helmet with it, but it has died. The auto-dim does not dim any more.
Suggestions for a new one? Or is there an easy way to fix this one? I tried taking it apart, but nothing looks serviceable.
I don't spend much time welding at all. Just want something to protect my eyes. And preferably not end up in a landfill within a few years.

The auto dim might just have dead batteries from lack of use. Set it in the sun for a couple of hours and try it again.
My current helmet came from Northern Tool. It was reasonably priced and gets the job done.
I hate auto-dim helmets. I mean, I love the concept, but in practise I find them to not always work well. I use an old, simply, manual helmet I bought for about $20 from Lincoln about 15 years ago. It never doesn't work.

Yeah, but with 7 months of hindsight, its a transformative technology as far as seeing what you are doing while welding.
Weldcote metals been using one for the last two years professionally and have no issues and won't kill your wallet.
I have a speedglass helmet and a lincoln viking helmet, to be honest i prefer the speedglass however the headband and swivel mechanism is a loy better on the lincoln, but it's very expensive I can buy it becouse I play for real money choosing good casino on this url https://casinos-advisor.com/. The lincoln viking helmet is a lot simpler to use and has external grinding/shading adjustment which i dont find annoying although they are a lot easier to cnock out of place than on the 3M one. One annoying thing, the lincoln is auto on/off and the 3M is push button to start/auto off, it has gave me quite a few flashes when i switch from one to the other...
I also don't weld a lot, just a project every few months. I bought a Tacklife auto dimming helmet off Amazon. Unfortunately out of stock :(
i don't weld alot anymore but i love having a great helmet for it i swear by miller digital infinity elite all it ever needs its new batteries and plastics and its good and i love the new multimatic 220 kinda a miller fan a lil biased
I had a Weldcote that was good for the money (four sensors, usually dimmed when it ought to).
I bought an ESAB Sentinel on Trent's recommendation when I signed up for three terms of TIG classes, and I really like it.
Heck, the Weldcote was probably his recommendation in the pre-true-color era. I tend to just try to copy him where I can, which is easier with acquisition than execution.
I don't think the HF ones are terrible. Mine just died at an inopportune time and I'm holding a grudge.
