I broke my cheap HF safety wire pliers years ago, and haven't needed to safety wire anything in a while.

But now I do...

I had a quick search and couldn't find anything about what sizes of wire the FIA or SCCA want; an EAA post mentioned 0.032 (IIRC) was the most common wire size, but that others were appropriate in different places...

Seems like pliers size is affected by most commonly used wire (thicker wire's more of a pain with bigger pliers, smaller wire easier to break, and of course if you can get away with smaller pliers they're easier to fit in tight places...

What pliers do people like, and what size wire for what applications?

At work I have used 0.020, 0.032, 0.040, 0.064 all with the same ~12" LW Pliers or my hands. I have also used 0.91 and 0.125, bur you really just need two pair of vice grips and small hammer.

I prefer to use 32 or 64 thou lock cable. Hand or pliers to hold the tail of the cable and a set of [s]dykes[/s]...er...diagonal cutters to crimp the swage. Super easy but I do not know if cable is allowed.

I think my LW pliers are Proto brand. 20, 32, 40 is probably all you need for a car.
