I don't but the game interests me as a free roam survival game/human experiment type thing.

This YouTube chanel in particular has made some really good content on the game.   I realize that it is hours and hours of time condenced down in to a "made for Youtube" presentations.

I really liked this Video he made.  Found it last night and an hour went by really fast.  I even liked the music that is in it.

There are worse things on Cable TV than what he has put together.

Yeah, that is pretty damn entertaining.  Very well edited, and yes, better than a lot of movies or TV shows I have seen.

It does seem like the game would be a serious time suck though.

A little late to the party, but I've been playing DayZ since the Arma 2 mod days. When the standalone was first announced, I jumped on it, and I have close to 1000 hours on that alone (probably several thousand on the Arma 2 mod).

They've never been able to solve basic Arma issues, such as vaulting over a low fence and your legs break, or wonky combat. The alpha was small, spawns were close, and loot was reasonable. You could get decently geared and go PVP at one of the usual hotspots.

Loot: They've never been able to make the loot table balanced. They either turned up the loot to 11, or 0. Custom servers don't do much better...

Vehicles: Wonky. Bad. No. Even if you manage to find a vehicle, good luck finding the parts to put it together to make it run, and by the time you do, all that time spent will for naught when another player group rolls up on you and thrashes you.

You will spend HOURS with your friends looking for gear only to lose it all in seconds. To enjoy this game, you HAVE to be in a clan, or playing with a decent sized group of dedicated players 8+ to make it worth your while doing the basebuilding and such. Otherwise, it's a walking sim.

They're so hell-bent on realism, that now you have to put an empty mag in one hand, and bullets in the other, and hold left click to load the mag... I get what they were going for, but DayZ is already brutal enough with the bugs.

Vanilla Arma 3 by extension is way more fun, though still plagued with some classic Arma bugs, but at least the game is fun playing King of the Hill or Wasteland Sandbox modes.

SCUM looks like a much better, more polished game, at this point if you're looking for survival/PVP games.

If you want FPS with some apocalyptic element, without the grind of walking around, Escape from Tarkov is also incredibly fun.

ETA: Unfortunately, content creators who make videos like the one above, are often incredibly misleading when it comes to what you yourself will experience in the game. They don't mean for it to be misleading, they do need to make their content entertaining.

Thank you for that write up. You have confirmed everything I have learned about the game so far.  It still interests me. There probably is not enough interest here but getting a small group together to go out and have fun and not take it very serious could be fun.  I can see how having a discord channel would be a must for that to work.

A couple of the content creators even put in there videos clips that say 4hours later and 6 hours later between cuts in there adventure.  In particular Soursweet is very good at this while still editing together a very interesting story/movie.

I occasionally pick it up every now and then, and since I've started streaming, have been looking for entertaining things to play that make for good content. I wouldn't mind jumping back into it if we can get a solid 5-6 person group.

I've got a few Discord channels, as well.

You'll need to log in to post.
