GRM ASSETTO CORSA RACE NIGHT

RESULTS:

Schedule:  Weekly - Wednesdays

   6pm Pacific - 7pm Mountain - 8pm Central - 9pm Eastern

Race Server Name: GRM_TEST (The password is the three letter acronym of a popular automotive magazine based in Florida, lower case)

Join the Discord channel: Unofficial GRM Forum to allow audio chat.

Car Choice:  Cars listed below.  (Car changes are allowed as long as you are not 1st or 2nd in the series points.  Cars can only be used once, where applicable)

Race Format:  Each track will be run twice on it's race night.  Each race being 10 min.  First race positions are based on qualifying.  Second race is an inverted grid of the first race results.

Points:  Point are accumulated base on the finishing order of the average of the two races (ties going to the better finisher of the first race).  1st place scores 10 pts, 2nd 8 pts, then 6,5,4,3,2,1 and zero after that.

Drops:  One drop per driver will be allowed.  Lowest point finish for series will not be counted.  If the series has more than 8 races, 2 drops are allowed.

Handicaps: Finishing 1st on a race day will result in 2 HC steps.  Finishing 2nd is one HC step.  Finishing 4th or lower will reduce you HC by 1 step.

Restarts and Yellow Flags:  Restarts can be called for with the consensus of the racers when the beginning of the race results in a significant crash.  Yellow flags can be called for with the consensus of the races and will require the lead car to slow until the pack has gathered (in single file), then the leader will initiate the re-start.

Courtesy Waits and Penalties: When a drivers action causes another driver to be forced off the course, or loose positions, it is suggested the offending driver wait for the affected driver, and let them ahead of them.  Penalties may be given out for serious offenses.  Penalties (determined by majority of drivers) will involve a lose of 2 points.

Setup and Getting Started Info

Discord download (for voice chat and info): https://discord.com/download

Content Manager and Shader patch - Highly recommended (CM requires a donation for full function, but WELL worth it):

 https://acstuff.ru/app/  (yes it's from Russia)

https://acstuff.ru/patch/  (not required by greatly improved graphic / appearance)

Sol graphic mod (not required but greatly improved weather /sky / atmosphere and some other effects): https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/sol.24914/

Suggested add-ons:

Helicorsa (adds nice overview of cars around you):  https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/helicorsa.5199/

FFBClip (adds way to graph and easily adjust force feedback, per car): https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/ffbclip-app.7910/

Sidekick (a more detailed "info" bar for speed, gear, tire temps etc.): https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/sidekick.11007/

Getting Started with Discord:

This looks long/complex, but I assure you it goes pretty fast and its very easy to use.

1) Read the Discord thread, if you wish: https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/simulation-central/grm-discord-channel/177517/page1/

2)  Download Discord from https://discord.com/

3)  Once you get it up and running, send me a message on there.  My name is prodarwin#1538.  Put it in the upper left box.    Just let me know you want a GRM invite and your forum name if I don't have any way of identifying you.

4) Make sure your mic works.  I suggest you go to user settings (bottom left of screen):

Click voice and video, adjust your volumes, and your devices if necessary.  You can select push to talk or 'voice activity'.  Discord is actually very good at deciding when you are talking, so it works pretty well and saves you the need to bind a button.

5) Once you are in the forum, if a bunch of stuff has a locked symbol, PM one of the mods.  They will need to add you to the GRM group so you have access to the sub-channels.

6)  When you are in the discord, you'll see this bar on the left, with all the channels you can join.

The important thing to note here is, when it comes time to play AC, look for the Assetto Corsa channel, if it shows some people below it, they are currently in the channel, which probably means we are racing.  Just click to join.

If you are in a text channel and want to get someone's attention you can @ them and it will display a notification, or send a push notification to their phone.

Logitech Wheel setup Info:

Logitech Profiler Settings (a good starting point at least):

In game Wheel settings (a good starting point at least):

Currently up there:

 - 7zip installer (use this to decompress car and tracks).  The default Windows decompress seems to work fine though.

 - Logitech Profiler (essential for setting up a Logitech Wheel)

 - Logitech GHub (needed for Logitech G29 wheel)

 - NVIDEA texture exporter plug in for Photoshop (needed to edit car textures)

 - NVIDEA stand alone texture exporter (no need for Photoshop)

Note: the NVIDEA tools are not needed if you have the Content Manager. I could not get the plug in to install in the latest version of PS anyway.

Here is a good link for how to setup a Logitech G27 wheel (G29 should be the same):

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=276305371

G27 (and maybe G29) should work best with gain set to 107%.

  • Thruxton
  • Riverside (short)

EDIT 03/28/2023

This week is testing of NA Miata's. And if time allows several other cars of similar speed.  The following week we will test some older cars and maybe a coupe open wheel cars (Things Air has suggested and are on the Google drive). Testing is going to be using the race format but the sessions cut down to 7-10 minutes. I am hoping to test 4 cars a night.

The new season should start on April 12th.  2023

EDIT 03/23/2022

It has been a while since I updated things.  The new server is up and running.  It appears to be much better then the old one.  Between a bunch more ram and a faster CPU things seem much better.  The new server is also has much better cooling.  The other improvement is I upgraded my internet connection to 1GB up and down so that should help as well.  With these improvements there has been no noticeable lag or drops at all.

Happy racing!!!

EDIT 10/08/21

We had a great turnout this week with the biggest field of drivers in a long time.  There was very close racing all through the field making it exciting no matter where you ended up.  Next up is High Speed Ring.  This is a beast of a track that absolutely punishes tires so the people HC tires assigned may actually have an advantage.  This tips the balance unexpectantly towards those that have been getting hit hard by the BOP that the tires have been creating.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this Wednesday or possibly in som testing sessions leading up to next weeks race .

EDIT 10/05/21

We are well into our first test series.  In the spirit of GT we are running as many of the old GT tracks that have been ported over to AC.  The big thing we are testing is the handicap system.  Tires versus assigning BOP (balance of performance) to specific drivers based on their previous finishing position.

The NSX is a tricky dance partner but as after a couple of races we are seeing it getting dialed in a bit more and the speed is being extracted from it.  It is very much like driving a 911.

Last week's race was great fun as we were on the Midfield track that I have not raced on in more than 2 years since we all left GT.  It was great fun.  Such a simple track and yet required a lot of technical driving.  IT was great fun.

I hope to see you all on track tomorrow!!!

EDIT 07/21/21

GTE cars are up at SPA   Good speed and a good mix of cars.   Had a really good test tonight

EDIT 06/09/2021

A new batch of cars is up on the server and the track is Mid Ohio.

This set of cars are all race cars with grip!!!  A nice change from the cars from Last week. .

Let me know if there is a car that you want added to the server. I am thinking next week we can run single make races due to a fiat500 probably not being competitive with GT3 cars. :-)

And as we have discovered sometimes the car you least expect to deliver good racing out shines the old favorites.

EDIT 03-15-2021

There are about 18 different cars on the server from both the 60s and 70s TC packs. Great cars to drive. There are some big differences in driving style needed but the lap times are close. We are running the short course at the glen bit I hope to change it out after this Wednesday for another track.

EDIT 03-04-2021

Server is up with Bridgehampton.  Palmer was causing my game to crash when I tried to log on to the server.  I tried all the cars and it is a track issue as swapping to The Bridge solved the issue.  Not sure what is up with that but for now The Bridge is up and running.

EDIT 02-26-2021

Server is being updated this week so if it is down you know why. Hopefully service will not be down for more than an hour or so.

I really like the elevation change at this track. And these cars are fast enough to toss from corner to corner. .

The server is named GRM_TEST (search GRM and it will show up)

The password is the three letter acronym of a popular automotive magazine based in Florida. (lower case)

All are welcome!!!!  Last week was great fun and we had a decent field of drivers.

EDIT:  I am using this post to put things specific to server setup.

The big one is we figured out how to assign cars to specific users and intern we can then apply handicaps to balance performance.  Here is my writeup from page 54 in the thread:

-----------------------

Posted 2021-10-04

So tonight I figured out how to assign players in the server to specific cars and in turn this lets me assign a HC or as the game calls it BOP  (Balance Of Performance)

To do it I need the players 17 digit Steam ID number.  This is what is referred to in the game as the players GUID.

So with this revelation we can look at adding weight and or power restrictions as HC and not have to worry about the generation of special tire models.

This is also going to require some testing to figure out how much weight and / or  restriction is added for each HC level.

Another benefit to this is I can now assign colors / liveries to people so if people want they can have a specific color car or car number if it exists as a livery for the car.

Or Air can make up specific liveries for a car then I can assign them.    Ya. . ..  ok. .. .   that last part may not be a good idea as I can see some shall we call them "creative" liveries showing up  :-)

If people want we can take this week to test this out. OR we can just run the regularly scheduled race.

Here is a screen shot from the server section where I assign drivers / players to cars.  I blanked out the Steam ID #s for security reasons  but with this setup sauce and I logged in and we were put in to the proper car and we had the assigned  BOP settings that are listed here as Ballast and Restriction.

OK, I will put that up there.

Yeah, if you could do some comparison I would be curious what you think.  There is clearly something different but I am not entirely sure what it is.  I think it may be the tire model is not as precise.  The same cars in both games can handle totally different though.  The stock Corvette in PC2 is pretty fun, in AC it's an absolute understeer pig (I may have left aids on though...).

You do have to be careful to make sure the aids are off on the cars though (if that's how you want to test)

Not as much crossover in cars as you would think, but totally went down the classic car hole.  There are some super cool car packs, including classic touring cars, and some classic NASCARs.

Here are some classic packs I recommend (nice, since you don't have to download them individually).  There are some others that apparently are performance balanced.

TransAm Legends 2.0

Nascar 1971 Pack

Touring Cars Legends (60's and 70's) - I love these, there also some other great packs on that site:

I have a G29/920.  I did zero configuring in my Logitec software outside of the game.  That software is inconsistent and a pain in the dick - I try and keep all of my settings in game (this goes for all racing games).  Also I don't have GHub.

Unless you guys are talking about the DPad.  AC does not support the default DPad on the G29, which drives me nuts.  You can use the logitec software to map those to other keys to work around the problem, but I don't trust the logitec software at all - it kept messing with my Dirt Rally 2.0 settings.  Logitec makes great hardware but their software sucks.

When you setup a profile for a game it bases that on the executable.  The problem is the AC game executable is not what is running when you are in the menu.  That's basically the 'launcher' and it runs the actual game engine after you've selected all your settings.

The fun part is because it is so moddable, you can get other launchers for it that suck less :)

Regarding the wandering effect, remove the absurd deadzone.  I have no idea why some games default to such a huge deadzone.

Edit:  Must have been thinking of a different game, I don't see the deadzone option in mine.

Are the compression files not .zip files?  Windows has had built in zip/unzip for decades.

When are we doing some races?

aircooled
aircooled MegaDork

Regarding the dead zone.  This may be mostly due to my predilection towards the old stuff, new cars seem to drive tighter.  I am not sure it's the looser suspensions or if they have a data point for older steering.

Regarding zip files: I suspect you are correct about the built in zip in Windows, just that StuffIt, for some reason gets errors in some of those files.

I have not tried any online yet, perhaps you can provide some pointers / suggestions.  There is in room voice chat right?

Oh, and how are rooms / cars normally performance balanced? One of the issues with PC is that because the car are depicted as realistically as possible there are some obvious performances differences in some classes.

BTW the Yenko Stinger destroys an RX3 touring car around Riverside.  I need to figure out what cars the Stinger raced against, I think it was GT3? Mustangs and such I believe. (Looks like D Production?)

@ Javelin. I also had to change USB types. My wheel did not like one of my USB ports.

Oh did you flip the switch on the wheel that sets it to pc from ps4?  On the G29 it is on top of the wheel center hub. I forgot about this when setting up my wheel.

Air,

I was looking around this morning and found this guide on setting up a server for AC

https://www.reddit.com/r/assettocorsa/comments/2la21d/assetto_corsa_server_setup_guide/

I am going to try it tonight and see if it works.

Edit:  8/16/20. this gets you a long way to getting things set up HOWEVER

The HTTP port forwarding on my router did not exist. There were no settings for it and no options for it. So I opened up another port in TCP and UDP for the port that was designated as HTTP (Port 8081) in the configuration for the Assetto Corsa server software and this fixed it.

Cool.

I did some minor looking and I might be having a firewall (or VPN?) issue.  I don't show anything when I look for servers in the game.  I am guessing there should be something showing?

One of the important consideration I can see with this game and setting up online races is making sure everyone has the same add-on content (honestly, for me, where all the cool stuff is).  There seems to be a filter for it, I am just a bit worried that there are different versions of the same things (e.g. cars) out there.  Most of the content sources seem to be pretty centralized though (e.g. Race Department), so maybe that's not a big issue.

I still need to look into editing car textures.  I kind of lost a bit of steam for that when I saw the INSANE amount of very cool stuff already out there (e.g. no need to re-create a Pensky themed Corvair, there already is one)

If this takes off I could set up a FTP folder on my server that you and I can uploaded content to  (tracks and or cars or other mods).  Then if we set up some sort of race I can give a direct link to the content needed for the race / series that others can down load so everyone ahs access to the proper content.  I think that would get around the content "issues".

Do servers serve up add-on content?

Quakeworld was great about this back in the 90s.  If you didn't have the right content, it would deliver it to you seamlessly.

Some great links up there that I have missed in the past, I loved playing GT Legends back in the day so seeing that content plus a bunch more is great.

I'll add this one - https://vrc-modding-team.net/

there is an external piece of software you can get called Content Manager for assetto corsa. Its donation ware, I believe you can pay $5 and get free updates for life.

https://assettocorsa.club/content-manager.html

it does offer a lot of tools (Like AO baking your skins for one), turn on/off/archive mods, and you can even set up and launch the game from content manager, instead of having to deal with loading up the game which I guess is slower.  I believe it is capable to link to certain websites to where if an update is released on say a car or map, the content manager will automatically download and update your game content.

The game itself wont download a missing car or track if you dont have it when trying to join a server, but it will tell you which one you are missing.  Im not sure Content Manager offers this either but its admittedly been a few years since I played the game. I sold off my wheel on here a few years ago.

Setting up a wheel takes a lot of trial and error and patience and a couple hours to get things dialed in on most PC games in my experience, especially if its a new game to you. I spent more time drifting on AC and it was hands down the best game out there for drifting, better than Forza and Rfactor for sure and like previously mentioned the tracks and cars are just endless.

I think using a ftp site to store content then giving people a link to download the content for a series would be the easy way to ensure people all have access to the content needed.

So I got the server thing figured out. Ok the basics of it. There are a tone of settings for all kinds of game related things. I am running it on my 8 core 16 thread 3700x the default is for 2 threads but I set it up so it has 4 leaving me 12 for gaming and the computers overhead and it seemed to be very happy. A cool feature is I could set up a whole season of preset servers with the track and cars all set up in about 15 minutes. It makes being an admin for a series super easy.

Got the port forwarding all taken care of. Setting up the three rules in my Verizon router was super simple.

I am really liking this!!!
