I assume that everyone will suggest The Crew so we can get that out of the way. I am looking to get a racing rig together and want to know what games I should consider. I have heard of iRacing. Thoughts? My PC will run basically anything.

NASCAR Racing by Papyrus.

I was/am a huge fan of rFactor with the Power & Glory as well as the Porsche Cup mods installed. It takes a bit of fiddling to get everything setup right but as of two years ago it was still superior to iRacing (except the marketing team) in feature set and driving dynamics.

Plus... pure porn to look at on screen:

For the cost of iracing, rFactor looks like a contender.

The Crew? Isn't that an arcade style crash racer? Seems wildly different from something like rFactor.

Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of fun with Burnout Paradise. Doesn't look like the reviews are that great. Doesn't look real appealing from what I have seen.

What's your thoughts on it?

I spent a lot of time on SimBin's FIA GTR2. Very similar to rFactor. I have a few iRacing obsessed friends.

I guess I missed the generation that pays $70 for a Game only to have to pay a additional fee monthly to play online, I just cant pay that much when I can buy a good racing game for $20. GTR2 (any of the Simbin games), F1 (Current Year), and rFactor are fun games if you like single player and don't mind adding mods. I like rFactor because there is so much variety and they pretty much have any track you could want even amateur. rFactor 2 is out but I have not played it on my computer as my computer has gotten too old.

I've been an occasional user of iRacing and also have rFactor. IMHO, iRacing is probably the best PC sim (haven't tried rFactor 2 yet).

However I just semi-switched to GT6 on the PS3 simply because my "gaming PC" decided to throw the towel and I currently don't have the nerve to build another one. Plus, a used PS3 turned out to be considerably cheaper than the PC I would have to build, and I wasn't looking at building something outrageous.

I use iRacing. Haven't tried rFactor 2.

AC is nice to look at, but no fun to drive.

Oh, OK. That makes a lot more sense.

I had heard there was some hype for The Crew (Project Cars used it as an excuse to delay their release), but from what I see it looks pretty bad.

Not a racer, but Euro Truck Simulator 2 is far more enjoyable than the premise suggests. Often on sale on Steam.

Live for Speed flies under the radar since it's development stagnated for several years. Has the best production car "feel," IMO. ( - AC doesn't run well on my system, so I don't have any real seat time in it.)

AC?

I actually have Euro Truck Simulator 2. It is much more fun than I thought it would be. Trigun - I don't want to pay a monthly subscription either. Not yet at least. If I race 4+ times a week then maybe. I will probably start with rFactor 1 when I get a PC wheel (stuck on the xbox 360 force feedback wheel for now). This is going to be a gradual build. I haven't done a subscription game yet and plan to avoid it if possible.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

+1 for rfactor and the GTRs.

GT6 is somewhere between Sim and Game. It's a lot easier to pick up and play and happens to have a really great GRM league.

+1 to Live for Speed.

Dirt cheap, runs on anything, still has great feel/physics. Probably not a lot of competition out there now though. I wouldn't mind seeing a GRM league for this.

I almost forgot about that game, I would be open to league play.

Has anyone played any of those games? It is worth $2.50 to try it out but man that seems cheap for any of those games (the 3 that actually look like sims) to be worth a damn. I am guessing that they are just older?

iRacing always has sales and promotions going on. Typically $40-50 for a year subscription.

And on weekends when the wife is away, I've easily put in 12+ races. 1-3 per night is typical since she travels for work during the week.

RACE07 and the add-ons are from the guys that did GTR/GTR2/GT Legends. Same game engine as rF, I believe. Has some mods available. I wasn't really a fan of the feel, and trying to get it to work with my 900-deg wheel (gee, just like rF). Worth a go at that price, though.

I've been playing Live For Speed since before I could legally drive. Great game and taught me a lot of car control. It helped me adapt to other racing sims such as iRacing pretty quickly, I think.

I've never been a big fan of iRacing due to its pay-to-play monthly fees.

I really want to try out Richard Burns Rally and the GTR2 Power & Glory mod. I couldn't find any info on the rFactor Power & Glory mod, so was that just a typo?

Race07 is worth the $2.50. The others are probably just time wasters. It's a good place to start.

Buy it a year at a time when they have sales for $49, which works out the same as buying Papyrus' title of the year back in the day.

Easily worth that for the sanctioning body/race management aspects, IMO.

Come on over and join us in GT6. New people are always welcome. Our last race of this season is this week and then we will be testing for a week and we should be kicking off another season. You don't have to race the whole season race when you can. Drop ins are welcome.

By the way when it comes to league racing it is much more about the people than the actual game/sim. Air has put together a fantastic series and the group of guys that we race with are all top shelf.
