This followed me home tonight:

Unrestored and still has it's original engine and gearbox.

Took it for a ride around the block tonight and it's awesome!

True story: My grandfather (a farmer) was into motorcycles his entire life. His last new bike purchase was a Matchless. It was still in the garage on the farm when they auctioned the estate in the very early 1970s. I'm surprised to this day my dad didn't keep it.

Anyway, a local car dealer who grew up with my dad collects motorcycles (he used to be a metric bike dealer in the 60s/70s also) bought it. Kept it in his collection stored 3hrs from the farm but only 5 min from where my family had a hunting camp. I never did get to see it or he collection despite this.

Around the early 2000s, my cousin, who had started riding (I think to get away from his wife, LOL) decided to look for the bike. Contacted the guy and he still had it. He was able to strike a deal, and brought it back into the family.

He lives about an hour from me. I still haven't seen the damn thing.

Fine. Which weekend should I come over so we can ride over to admire it and tell lies?

Trans maro, that's a wonderful machine to have follow you home.

I hope you just clean it up and leave it as is. That thing is awesome.

That's exactly what I'm doing.

I restore cars all day, some that shouldn't be restored but I'm not the owner and I'm not paying the bill.

This is mine and it's staying just as it is save for some mechanical fiddling.

You need to take that to the Isle of Man. You'd be a rock star.

Umm... No...

If I drag a knee, it's all part of the crash.

Progress report..

The Amal pre-monobloc carb is worn the hell out and it looks good sitting on my shelf. A new Keihin carb took it's place and after a jet swap, it's running very, very well. Starts on the first kick, hot or cold.

I've still got a bit of carb tuning to do but it's 90% of the way there.

I opened the timing chest, everything looks great, checked the rockers and set the valves.

Changed all the fluids and installed a brake light switch.

Replaced all the cables, I have brakes now!

Should be ready to hit the road soon!

Good choice swapping the carb! there are places that will "fix" the old one by boreing the slide and sleaving it and matching it with a new slide. Save that for when you no longer want to ride it.

Exactly.

The Amal is more like a pipe with a few holes in it than a proper carburetor.

A friend of mine has a 1946 Indian that he rides a LOT, it's got a Mikuni now and it's far better.
