In this case one with half an engine (no top end) that's been sitting in a barn. Title unlikely. Some surface rust, still covered in barn filth. Guy wants $300, I think more like a third of that? They only made 60 million cubs after all.

Well, in SE Asia I'd say free. But SE Asia is not SE Michigan.

You've got a rusty non-complete Honda Cub? Unless you really have it bad for this specific model, it sounds like a lot of labor and not a lot of raw material. If you had to pay to have it done, you'd be beyond upside-down, right?

The idea is to get a cheap basket case cub(So in the USA, a CT trail cub or Passport), make it roadworthy and safe over the winter(tires, brakes, bearings, cheap), leave it ugly as it came to discourage theft and save money, and bolt a lifan 125 square motor in there, keeping it on a moped tag. Build a ultimate city beater bike for under $500 sort of deal.

The more I look at the current US market for various cubs, the more I wonder how profitable a 40 ft container full from Vietnam would be, selling them to hipsters.

$100 tops.

There was a non-runner CT70 I tried to snag for $100, it was a Tahitian Red 1980 model. PO died and his kids were selling it. It had no spark, just needed points and condenser.

If it is clean, I'd pay $200 for it and throw a Lifan 140 in it with HEI. Would be a fun ride. The wheels are kind of pricey, so I'd make sure they were in decent shape.

No title kills the deal for me. I wouldn't mess with it.

I wouldn't. Far too many in decent shape to bother with this one.

In reply to foxtrapper:

Anything in decent shape I've come across is asking a 4 digit number, complete and not running like $600. And an ugly one with a bad motor is kinda preferred, because ugly decreases theft and the stock engine is too weak for Detroit anyhow. In MI, mopeds (sub 100cc) aren't titled, so IDGAF about that. The market for these seems to be ridiculous up here.

Before you go too far with this thought that a CT90 can run moped tags, you might want to read this link. I think you're off on several points. CC, top speed, and transmission for example.

I didnt say it was completely legal. And they upped the displacement to 100 recently. A stock autostick CT90 is a moped in the state of MI depending on what you consider "shifting gears" and how long your willing to wait to exceed 30mph. They aren't inspected and I've seen far more heinous violations get away with it, like 50cc scooters with 150cc motors shoved in them.

That sounds like a parts bike and not a good starting point for a project.

Eh, engine less is good in my book, everything else on that bike is like $4 on ebay and there aren't many things. Just tires, brakes, and bearings.

Totally depends on where you are located. In NorCal, I'll see people trying to sell running Trail 90s for $3000. Then the next day, an ad for six bikes for $300 total.

I usually find most of my project bikes in the $100-500 range, depending on rarity.

I purchased a non runner for $500 with title, and got a 90% intact parts bike too.

Offer him $100, tell him to give a counter. In the end he has a collection of junk worth $50 to the scrap pile if that.

I would go $200 if the chrome was good and the paint was salvageable. Honda engines are stupid easy to fix. You can also swap in a Chinese copy, but I prefer to keep 'em original.

The last basket case I bought was a Honda CB100. It came with a hand written bill of sale.

I took the bill of sale to the Michigan secretary of state and they ran the VIN. It took them 1/2 hour to get a clean report back and they allowed me to apply for a title in my name. Running the VIN cost $20.00 in 2008.

Small town Secretary of State offices are easy to deal with and tend to have reasonable people.

Depends on where you live; I've had quite a few no-title vehicles on the street in Georgia with no hassles getting them registered.

Congratulations. Just over the state line, we are screwed.
