When I bring my BMW R-1100rt in for its annual inspection I have the guy do an oil change. I think this may put a coupla bucks in his pocket and he may look the other way on a nonconformity. Hey, you never know.

Today I tried changing the oil. [Inspection due in August and my shop is out of business]. I had to use a 3 ft. breaker to get the drain plug off and now I can't get the oil filter out. The filter is recessed up inside the oil pan with the face of the can up above the bottom of the pan. I have the official BMW oil filter wrench and I have one of those three fingered guys that grab the filter and rip metal off if the threads don't give it up.

Nadda. It ain't moving.

If it stuck below the oil pan I would harpoon it with a screwdriver and twist it off, but I can't get to it.

Any ideas?

Shotgun? No wait, this isn't a stuck lug nut. Sorry, I have no better answer.

Oh great, sounds like gorilla-wivva-toothache struck again. Neither of the two (filter or plug) should be that tight in the first place...

I'd think that the three-fingered wrench should move it if you can get it on properly. I'll try to remember to ask my BMW specialist on Monday what he does in situations like this when I have a new tyre fitted to my 1150RT.

I'm assuming the engine is hot vs warm when you do this?

Stone cold. The three fingered wrench won't budge it.

I've always had better luck when the engine is hotter...try letting the bike run for 15-20 minutes then try it

Do you have room to swing an approved factory hammer at the 3 fingered wrench?

I think Grtechguy's suggestion is worth trying - if you can manage without burning yourself... I think I had to do that on a K100 once which has a similar oil filter arrangement.

Yep, the engine heat with expand the oil filter "nut" just enough. Probably spin off by hand if the engine is at operating temperature.

besides, why are you trying to change the oil with the engine cold? takes forever to drain

Got it!!!!

Three fingered wrench on a 3ft. breaker with a vise grip opposite the breaker. I was lying on the floor with the breaker, my neighbor was lying on the other side of the bike pushing on the grips.

I'd pay $100 to get my hands on that "mechanic's" neck for one minute.
