It seems that your guess is correct. They hid him away for awhile so the internet could have time to forget about this and find something else to go viral over. Frankly... I'd be fine if they let him keep his job - but he needs to be maced right square in the face while traveling at lethal speeds on two wheels as a re-educational "continued learning thru empathy" type course.
They should let him keep a desk job only if everyone that was affected by the pepper spray gets to spray him, one person each day, for consecutive days.
It even looks like they got over for him - see they're only in the left side of the right lane and the right side of the center lane. I bet they were initially all in one lane and jogged over to give him room. Good job punishing good deeds.

You know, if I was one of these guys I would be pressing criminal charges against him. It's certainly reckless endangerment if a case can't be made for attempted murder. Where is the petition, I want to sign it.
Take away his badge and charge him with assault. There is no place for sadistic power hungry cops like that. That was irresponsible and dangerous.

Yea, the video shows some of the best behaved riders for a generic herd. Doesn't support the supposed claims of hooliganism.
Even if hooliganism is involved, he risked many, many lives. If it warents it, write them a citation.
That cop is a grade A asshat. I'm sure some of his 2 wheeled brothers would like to have a word with him.
