I have been looking at used motorcycles and have noticed some (to me) low mileage bikes for sale. What would be a normal amount of miles put on a bike per year?

What should someone look for when inspecting a bike that has low mileage?

What about tires and drive belts?

This is one bike that has caught my eye, I have seen pics and looks as clean as the second bike listed.

And this one.

2008 Buell = ~100 miles per year. Good? Bad? Was ridden for two years and then abandoned? Knowing the bike's history helps your decision.

If I lived in Vegas I wouldn't own a car. Unfortunately I live where it snows and mileage on my bikes reflect that.

I've never had a belt drive bike, but I assume you would look for cracks and missing teeth on the belt. If you don't know how the bike was ridder or the maintainence history, buy new tires. (Tyres if it's a Brit bike) Money spent on new rubber is waaaaay easier than spending money on bandaids etc. when you blow a front tire.

What Dan said applies to belts too. You can't always see the cracks. If a wear item is questionable or the maintenance of it an unknown, count on doing it. The mileage thing is the difference between being a biker and a motorcyclist. Also, a lot of bikes have been bought by "fashionistas".

People generally sell their toys first when things get tough. And I agree about new tires quick regardless of how they look, the rubber will harden over the years and can separate without any warning. Seen that a couple of times. On a dirt bike that might not be a real big deal, but on a street bike... ouch.

One thing to bring with you when looking at any bike now is a small bright flash light and a dental mirror. Inspect the inside of the gas tank!
The thought never even crossed my mind when i was buying my Ducati... Dam i missed my biggest bargaining point. Tank had been lined over rust and had blistered. So far I'm over $150 and close to 20 hours to fix it. MEK will remove the failed liner but its not cheap anymore at $48 per gallon then i used some electrolysis to get most of the rust but with so many folds in the metal line of sight was not good so stopped that and am using Evapo-rust. and rolling the tank around. Next will be water wash out. Two flushes with MEK and compressed air then hair dryer once i know the vapors are gone. It will be getting Caswells "Dragon Blood" 2 part sealer. Major pain in the ass!
