The manual says .65 quarts for a drain-n-fill, and .75 quarts for a rebuilt engine. I did my first change today, let it drain a good long time.

It took .75 quarts, and the oil level still isn't to the top of the hash marks on the dipstick. Yes, I checked with the bike upright, and yes, that's after running if for a few minutes.

Does this seem odd, or is there some variance?

Probably a miscalculation, always go by the dipstick.

I wouldn't fret, the owners manual says "approximately 1.5 U.S. pints" to fill on an oil change. So I'd say .75 would be about spot on.

I'm pretty sure that you could fill one of these engines with sand and it wouldn't even notice. I wouldn't worry about it.
