Just got the T250 with 73 GT250 engine back from the dealer (whom I wanted to adjust my oiling system, but who did not rebuild the engine). This was the first time trying to ride the bike and I find that I only have 2nd and third gear. It won't go below neutral or above third. The entire engine was rebuilt, new crank, etc. . and the engine builder machine shop said everything in the gear box looked good when they had it apart. It shifted through the gears before I had the engine built. Looking for clues as to what might be wrong.

Linkage by the sounds of it
In reply to yamaha:
Clutch linkage or something internal with the shifter forks?
Check that the shift mechanism is put together correctly. When I put the punky buellster back together after transmission installI didn't install a spring correctly and the shifting was nothing but bad. I took the primary cover/clutch/primary chain/alternator off 3 times, what a pain. Shifting felt limp dick for lack of another word. The detent spring was the one I hadn't installed correctly.
Bike also has a kick starter problem since the rebuild. One you kick it, the kick starter does not snap back. You have to pull it back, but you can feel the spring wind and it will stay in place. I wonder if they are related problems.

I fiddle with the linkage and ran it do as to wet the clutch plates. I got it into first! It pulls so well on the old carbs, I might not install my new VM 26s. I did not shift out of first as I put the bike away when t began to rain.
Could it have been a combo of a misadjusted cable and a clutch which was not fully wet with oil yet?
In reply to Moparman:
Stopped going into first again. I had the clutch cover off and clutch and gear selector shaft move as they should. I guess I will have to have the machine shop take it all apart.
I will contact the machine shop tomorrow. If they give a hard time the bike with be for sale. It is a 71 T250 (orange). Paint is in good shape. It has new tires (about a mile of riding), rebuilt forks, new rear shocks. rebuilt engine (with rebuilt crank from Paul Miller Suzuki) carbs on it are stock, be cleaned and rejetted. I have two new Mikuni VM 26s in box jetted for the T250/GT250 engine. Has pod filters as p/o lost the air box. New Wiseco pistons. Starts on first of second kick. Have extra parts. Runs real nice. Have all receipts. Make offer (cash or trade). Health issues forces sale. I cannot deal with continuing this project.
I am in the Pocono Mountains of PA and can deliver the bike. I have a signed transferrable NY registration. If it does not transfer, money back guarantee.
