Back story: My folks are recently retired, and renting a place in Florida to try out life as snowbirds. I am planning to go down and visit for a long weekend sometime in the next month or two. My dad worked in FL before they had kids, and many times on the weekends he would ride down to the Keys with friends from work. He gave up riding while my folks raised all us kiddos, but now that everyone is out of the house he has started riding again and is considering getting another motorcycle.

As a cool father-son adventure, I was trying to rent a pair of bikes in Miami, probably Harleys since they have such a great support network and rental program, and when I fly down, surprise him at the dealer with bikes and gear waiting to run that same trip down to the Keys.

I saw the Harley Dealer Employee thread, and was wondering if any of you guys can shed some light on the program and offer tips and tricks. If I go to the website to check availability:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Content/Pages/Try_a_Bike/rent-a-bike.html?locale=en_US&bmLocale=en_US

And put in Miami as a location, a couple of dealers pop up, but none of them show any availability for a 3 day window. One had a single '48 Sportster, but would only show 1 day timing, going over that caused it to blank out.

Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks!

Call. Pick one, and call. Mrs RMD has been in the rental booth, and it's much easier to talk to a live person.

we rented a fat boy and a V-rod in Tampa a few years ago. FL is not the best place to ride (flat and boring roads) but when it is cold up here, I would take it in a heartbeat. We planned ahead sent jackets and helmets with the inlaws when they drove down in January. Then we UPS'ed them back before we left so that we would have them for early spring riding back in Ohio since they stay well into April. I have rented bikes in other cities as well. I always called ahead. Don't forget to ask for discounts for 2 bikes, all they can do it say no. We got a 3rd day free when I rented a bike in Ohio for 2 days.

Just be prepared for the possibility of pucker-inducing crosswinds over a ton of narrow, long bridges.
