OK, so Honda released a new bike that I would actually want for the first time in years with the CB1100. So last Saturday the wife and I went to a local Honda dealer to look at them and I fell in love. Absolutely in love. It's everyting my old Nighthawk was but modern with more power, better brakes etc.
Wife and I talked, and she made the comment "You get the corvette sold and sell your bike so we can pay off the Forte, I don't care if you get it."
Is spending $9k for a new bike insane? I've had the same bike (1993 Nighthawk) since November of 1998. I've never had a new bike and to be honest, this would likely be my last bike (I'm almost 40 so keeping this one another 15 years would put me at retirement age).
So the question I present to the hive is: If you could, would you?
That is a nice bike. $9k out the door? Doooo eeeet.
Would I do it? Doubt it. I'd rather buy one a year or two old, for half the price, or better.
But, if it's something you really want, and the depreciation matters not a bit, and you can afford it, go ahead.
I could, but I would never spend that kind of money on a bike. If it's what you want, and you can afford it, go for it.

Since the bike has only been on the market for about 3 months, I'll have to wait a couple years for that to happen.
When my wife said I could trade my Super Glide for a Road Glide, if I got financing approval, I jumped right on it.
When the wife says “OK" to a new “toy", don't dawdle. Strike while the iron is hot!
Be sure to post pictures of your new bike.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. But then again, the vette has been for sale since October with no buyer yet and I've dropped the price $2k.

If exotics for middle class incomes are okay around here, $9k for a Honda CB of any sort should be easily acceptable, right?

I'll give you $2500 for the Vette if that makes it easier. Cash this weekend.
In reply to mtn:
I'm not dropping the price ANOTHER $2k.
Your vette is nearly cheap enough for me to impulse buy it (Seriously like $500 away).
I would totally buy the new shiny thing. I have done it in the past and will do in the future. If it's the bike you want and you are willing to pay the amount over a used one don't think twice about it. People on this site get so hung up on saving $$ buying used. I personally don't think there is anything wrong with buying something new if it is what you want to do and are not risking your financial success by doing so.

$3,000, final offer
Wait, I lied! $3,000 AND a cheap Washburn acoustic guitar with a hard shell case.
Honestly, wife and I talked about this the other day, someone showed up with $4k cash and it's gone. Hell, I'm tired of having to move it to mow!
In reply to nocones:
I've bought new several times, but when we do it's for the long haul. The truck we bought new in '06 and we'll have it until it rusts in half. I bought the Elantra new, drove it until the core support almost fell off from rust after almost 11 years and 160k. I get a Honda Employee discount so it drops the price close to a grand after taxes.
Hmmm.. on the Vette.
Order a pretty color on the Bike.
It only comes in red..... but the only thing body colored is the tank. I'm thinking of going with the blue my Nighthawk is.
Cool bike, but not $9k cool.
Probably won't sell a lot and then won't deprecate a lot either* in the long run so I would go for it if you love it and plan to keep it.
*think of the CB1000 "Big One" or Ducati Sport Classics. this thing will probably not be a huge seller and then taken off the market in 2 or 3 years. Once it is gone, people will then realize it is what they wanted.
If I hadn't bought two stupid projects in the last few months I would be all over your 'vette right now at that price. If I could sell my pickup and my wagon easily I would do it but I'm going to have to fix the pickup's back brake lines to get anything more than junk price for it. Jeez, timing is bad, huh?
$4k is a steal for that thing. When would you need it by?? :-)

Thing's been for sale since last October.... I refuse to put $4k on the CL ad so it'll probably be up for sale this October.
It looks like a $1000 1980's UJM to me, but if it sets your pants on fire, then the price is moot. Will you ride it? Will you get your money's worth out of it? Then go for it!
Only buy a new bike if you're going to keep it forever.

I'm in the camp of buy it if you want it. Sometimes it's nice to buy new and be the only owner.
