A friend just posted this picture of her great-grandmother. Any idea what model Indian she's on?
I thought it was a 31 Scout, but the kicker is on the wrong side. I think the headlight may have been changed and the horn was probably moved.
I was going to say 20's Scout head lamp looks proper with the up sweep mount, Tank looks right with the speedo sticking up, but kicker is on wrong side as woody said. The guy i'd normaly call on for this would be Whitey Anderson but he passed away middle of December. The guy to ask now would be Butch or Tom Baer. http://www.acenturyofmotorcycling.com/

there is a plate on the front. If it were reversed, wouldn't the numbers be backwards?

Yes, they would be.
New Mexico plates?

I think this side of her family was French-Canadian, but that doesn't mean she wasn't allowed in New Mexico.
Tim Baer here, Butch is in Florida untill the first if april. Nice photo of the girls on the Indian, I wish there was more of the motorctycle there. My guess is 1926-1931 Indian "74"ci Chief with side car. The Chiefs kick starter moved from the left to the right side in 1932. The tank, forks, cylinders and forward crossmount on the lower frame are all correct for these years. I don't believe it to be the earlier 61 cu in model, the cylinders would have more daylight around them.
