I am making a cafe seat for the GS400 and I am looking for some DIY seat foam. I want it very firm and no more than 2" think. I was thinking about chopping up the lady's yoga mat, but chickened out.

Fabric shops have tons of foams. That'd be were I'd start.

For thick, cheap foam, buy a high density foam sleeping pad from Walmart, and rubber cement the layers together, then shape it how you want.

I did up my bike seat with pieces of a "bottom cut" of super high density memory foam from a place called Dynamic Systems. It's awesome. For about $30 shipped, I got enough foam to do at least a half dozen bike seats. I used the excess to make seat inserts for both of my race seats in the Miata, and I still had enough left over to use as a bedroll for trackside camping (works great, but isn't exactly packable).

I got mine in "medium", and IMO it worked great for the seats. For someone a little lighter, or after a more plush seat, the softer ones might work better, but I think the medium would be perfect for you.

Nice. Did you build up the bottom cuts to make it thicker. What did you glue them with. Thank that looks perfect.

Yeah, I built up about 3 layers in the middle of the seat, and then contoured it with an electric turkey knife and a coarse body filler rasp. I used 3m Super77 to adhere the layers together. My seat is probably a lot thicker than you are looking for, though. I know the links says the sheet is .75" thick, but that's more like a minimum. It's not perfectly even as you can see in the pic, but the sheet I got probably averaged 1-1/8" or so. You can also easily fillet off that bubbly crusty layer if you have an electric knife, and that will leave you with around 3/4-1" of foam clean on both sides. If you are going to do this, get an electric turkey knife, totally worth the $15 or so (less if you hit a yardsale or something). You will hate yourself trying to cut this stuff with anything else.

HINT: Place foam in the freezer for an hour or so before shaping make it cut alot better! PS: don't let wife see you do it..
