So, Lehigh FSAE is looking at changing engines for next year. We never build anything even remotely conventional, so I came here for engine suggestions
It needs to be under 610cc, and 4 stroke, but other than that options are pretty much wide open. I have thought of all the reasonable options already, but dirtbike singles and 600cc I-4s are so overdone in this competition. What can you guys come up with?

2 of these is WELL under your displacement limit and should produce somewhere around 43 HP.

5 of these is much closer to your displacement goal and should make near 56 hp

I like the 5 engine idea, 1 per wheel and 1 spinning a suction fan for downforce, disguised as a cooling fan because they're air cooled. Needs to be 4-stroke, though.
Back when I was in it the team I was with did an F4i and was looking at the CBR600RR motor for the future. The F4i we did made 87hp in FSAE trim. Lots of work went into making that power though. (carbon intake, lots of computer modeling, expensive internals, headwork, coatings)
Destroke the SV650, Triumph Daytona?
Some idiots on a previous FSAE team at my school decided to cut a Buell 1200cc in half.
We are using a Suzuki GSX-R 600 because it was free. If money was no problem, I would use 550 Aprillia engine.

12 of these gives 57 HP

16 of these gives 56 HP

If could only use a 2 stroke...
174 of these

Gives you 469 HP!!!!!! WOW!! The drivetrain would be tough, and starting them all would be... interesting, but the sound of a 174 cylinder engine making 469 HP at 38,000 RPM would be impressive.
Have you considered a 4-stroke outboard boat motor? I don't know anything much about them so I can't make a specific recommendation.
Other than that, how about a 500 Interceptor V4 bored out to 600cc or a 750 Interceptor destroked/bored to 600cc?

9 of these should give you 99 HP

Since our advisor was a big-time NASCAR engine guy, we wanted to use 1/8th Chevy 350 V8 destroked to make 600cc. It ended up being way too much to accomplish in the time we had so we went with an F4i.Made 80hp without opening the engine up, but lots of dyno time.
I always thought an air-cooled engine would be a great idea, no cooling system to deal with. The guys from Michigan that used the briggs twin were awesome. The Citroen 2CV used an air/oil cooled flat twin in various sizes. The year I graduated a friend of mine used on to power his senior design project; a badass hovercraft! Brought the thing to the showcase and flew it all over the campus. Drew a huge crowd. It was great.
I got a V4 sitting in the garage. It is out of a FSAE car, and has the exhaust and intake there I know a plenumed EFI intake, maybe carbs too!
Not sure that I can ship it for, but I can get prices if you want and pics. :)
Take a Mazda 12A apart, make a new eccentric shaft, and have yourself a 0.6 liter Wankel?
Honda CX500 V-twin?
Turbocharge a Yanmar diesel?

Dude, you still have that engine? Have you done any work on the frame? I would love to see some pics.
In reply to mblommel:
To help jumble up the thread, yes :) The only progression so far is the car is hung in the rafters. I was moved for work a couple of months after I got it and got married a few more after that. Been working on other cars so it has sat :(

No rotaries allowed in FSAE.

Try a junior dragster engine. One of them makes somewhere from 20-40HP depending, and you would use like 4 of them for a four cylinder "engine".
Two strokes aren't allowed either. I believe Washington state built there own 600cc V8.

Were you saying that in response to my "junior dragster" suggestion? Those are four stroke engines...
I would try to find the most powerful v-twin out there... torque! :)
My bad someone said if two-strokes were allowed. I misread.
What are the rules for forced induction?
The turbo has to be downstream of a 20mm restrictor (19mm if running E85).
hmm... small ball bearing turbo on a 600cc GSX-R motor, a 19mm restrictor, running e85, should make a LOT of torque...
