Last year I ran a few hare scramble races with some friends. Had fun, learned a bunch, and best finish was 4th.
Flash forward to this year, raced a bunch, learned some more and finished 1st in my class for the season
On a side note picked up a gopro just in time for my last race. vid
I run a trials tire and had less than 0 grip in the muddy stuff.
Can I toot your horn too?
Congratulations.
I spent 12 or so years doing hare scrambles. I miss it but I don't miss going over the bars at 50 mph anymore. Or launching myself off the side of a logging road at over 60. Or the time I hit the bars so hard I had the imprint of the cross bar in my stomach for over a week. Or the three broken toes. Or the patch of my left ankle that has so much nerve damage that i no longer have any sensation there.
Good times. And I didn't even really win anything! I still have my bike and I tell my wife that I didn't ever actually quit, I just got busy.

Should probably buy him dinner first.
That looks like a lot of fun, from a guy who has no idea what he's looking at. Would I be wrong in saying that the start is 95% of the race? You obviously have skills getting through the trail, but I don't see any spot to pass.
Great start! You were what, 5th going into the first turn out of 40 or 50 bikes? The woods were a lot more open than the average course down here till after the creek (what was with that line selection?
) then it got about as tight as what I'm used to. Ah, good times. Congrats on the year end finish!
We ran one HS down here which went through a 6' diameter culvert under a road. At the riders' meeting, they'd tell you 1) duck 2) go like hell, because where it came out the water had dug a hole about 4 feet deep in the creekbed.
The water was around a foot deep in the creekbed generally so the total depth would be about 5 feet. Every year, one or two guys wouldn't get the message, slam on the brakes at the end, then fall in the hole and drown their bikes there.
