So about a year ago a friend of my brother brought me a 1992 Kawasaki Ninja 600R for me to give a general evaluation and get it running, well i got it running but it needed a ton of work to be safe to ride. So i told the guy what it needed, carbs rebuild, new chain, new tank, new bodywork, new airbox, brake master rebuilt and 2 new tires he then decided he didn't want me to repair the bike and didn't want to come get it, plus he didn't pay me for the little work i already did.

So the bikes been sitting in my barn for about a year now, so what do i with it?

If i was to sell it don't i have to file a claim with the DMV to get a title first?

There should be a process for that. Mechanics Lien, followed by some paperwork.

Likely not worth the hassle, so remove engine and use it in a go-kart.

Sell it for parts? You can't scrap the frame without a title, though.

No, but if the frame is cut up into 6" lengths it can be sold as scrap. That bit with the numbers on it never existed.

You got hosed.

You can file a Mech lien BUT Beware! You have to prove what condition the bike was in when it got to you and you have to provide documents of work done and it must be stored in "proper manor as to protect from further damages" so say that master turns out to be non rebuild-able due to continued attack by the water in the lines your no on the hook...It can also take up to 2 years to get the title. Oh and then the lic board and the DMV can come down on you as well as the town for zoning if your not a lic and permitted shop... Thankfully I only got to watch this process kill another shop. This happend to me twice, once i sent over a big dude to have a talk with him, it worked but cost me 50% of the bill. The other time bike got put in a storage trailer for 2 years then after the guy moved twice i parted it out.

Can you ask the guy for the title? If you or your brother still have contact with him maybe he'll give it to you or sell it to you for a couple hundred bucks. It would be worth that much!

Tell him you'll be dropping it in front of the door to his house (in big, hard to move parts) in 48 hours unless he give you the title.

Thanks for all the advice guys and heres a little update

I finally got the guy to call me back after months today and talked to him about the bike, it turns out he bought the bike with no title and thought some how i was going to fix it for free with no parts (i told him 300$ plus parts before it was ever dropped off) and he'd be on his marry way....So any way i filled an abandoned vehicle claim with the dmv today so they are going to send a certified letter to the last titled owner and request them to contact me and remove the vehicle if no one contacts me by the 4/18 then i can post an intent to sell on the dmv website and after 30 days the dmv will issue me a new title

I'm at the point where i don't care if any one comes and gets it but i am pulling the 350$ V&H exhaust off and keeping it regardless lol

If any one was wondering what this jewel looks like i snapped a few pics lol It's missing a few parts and needs a ton of work but what ever maybe if i get the title i'll build a street fighter

Oddly enough i use to own an almost identical bike a few years ago

Here's a pic for(possible) inspiration. This one used to belong to a friend of mine. Different model, but I think yours could actually look better.

Honestly, I would clean up whats there, remove the crap you dont need (fairings, and whatever is left of that urethane abortion of a seat), and see whats left...if all you need is a tank and a seat, and the rest is there, just needing some mechanical work...well, your free time is free. I see a lot of possibility there actually.

Good news after filing an abandon vehicle claim with the dmv the last titled owner called me today. I talked with him and explained how i got the bike and its condition and he wanted nothing to do with it.He said the bike was sold 10 years ago and since then has never been retitled. Basically as soon as the 28th rolls around i'll have the title in hand for this bike.

I have decided to keep the bike and build a street fighter out of it because the bike looks much worst then it is, i even got it running a few days ago with a make shift tank and all it really needs is -tank -seat -carbs rebuilt -master cylinder -tires

small update-I had a few hours of free time today so i worked on the bike a little, stripped off the front fender, carbs, exhaust, and rest of the tail section. I also did a compression test and everything looked ok. So for now i'm kinda at a stand still till parts start showing up at the very least my new tail section should be here Monday so i can start cutting and welding on this thing

Old V&H exhaust is looking pretty ruff, i don't know if this is a testament to there quality or the poor storage of the bike but either way looks like i'm gonna become close friends with my wire wheel.

I'm a little suspicious of these carbs because after looking them over, it appears someone has been inside of them before but the pilot screw covers are still there so maybe there have just been rebuilt. I guess i'll let them just sit untill i get my stage 3 jet kit before tearing into them
