So I'm sorta in the market for a dualsport (a.k.a. if I find one dirt cheap I'm grabbing it) but I'm not in a big rush. I came across this bike while perusing craigslist today and am intrigued. It needs a cam but I've had the cams out of my roommate's dirtbike while adjusting the valves and that wasn't a big deal at all. My concern here is what causes a cam to go bad? Is this indicative of a far larger problem or should I already have called this person and given him/her some cash?

Worry about the cam bearings. If I recall, they run in the head, and are not replaceable.

XR don't have cam bearings from the factory the cam ride in the alum head. This happens cause people don't change the oil enough. There are a few shop out in Ca that will line bore the head and fit with one plain bearing and a needle bearing on the chain side. last i looked it was $375 to do it to a xr100 i was going to build...
