I started doing this with a snorkel a couple of years ago in my cold garage .... I tried holding my breath previously .... you are also breathing air from over your shoulder so not as many fumes.

I just wear a respirator under my helmet--way more comfortable, you can weld better without worrying about getting too close to the puddle, and it's way safer too.

Now this is the GRM content I come here for. wink

Does any company make a welding helmet with a combined snorkel/respirator? Seems like a worthwhile selling point.

It is called a PAPR system. Powered Air Purifying Respirator.

For some reason it is more expensive in the USA than other countries although the difference is getting smaller. Last year when I looked into it the difference was over $1000.

When will Harbor Freight have a version?

Another trick from the SCUBA world, if you have issues with fogging, use dawn dish soap in some water (like washing a car) and dunk the goggles or whatever fogs up in them then let it dry. The film keeps moisture off and is transparent. Beats paying for "defogging spray".
