Here's a quick suggestion: if you are soldering two wires together and do not have a "third hand" tool to hold them in place, you can use a spray paint cap. Place it upside down on the table like a cup, cut a slot on either side and place your wires in the slots while you solder over the cap. The cap also catches any dropped solder.
