If I’m having a hard time keeping gear puller jaws tight, I’ll put a large hose clamp (or daisy a few together) around the jaws to keep them from opening up.
A good zip tie might suffice as well.

My wife bought me sleep underwear from Big Dog brands and one pair has embroidered near the flap "Jaw Breaker". After 32 years of marriage it was funny to us.
I expected a photo of broken teeth (human) and blood.
And after the 85th time the cheap hardware holding the various bits of the puller together loosens up, replace the regular nuts with nyloc nuts. Maybe even replace the bolts with higher-grade versions to keep them from bending/failing.
