So, back in March, life lined up a number of weird coincidences and I was suddenly in the market for a new daily. I convinced SWMBO that we needed a truck, and that I needed it to be a manual transmission specimen (because automatic transmissions are where dreams go to die). The need for a 3rd pedal limited my options. Luckily, I have loved the  new Jeep Gladiator since it was just a concept, and was able to find a new example nearby that was a 6 speed gas offering, with a suitable number of niceties that the missus could be persuaded to occupy said vehicle for an extended period of time. The upside is that the one I found was a '22 and the dealership was willing to play ball since the pool of shoppers for manuals shrinks by the minute. After a test drive, and some back and forth with the salesperson, I was able to make her mine for a great price.

I ended up with my personal dream truck - a 2022 Jeep Gladiator Overland - this trim included heated leather seats, runningboards and nice 18" alloys. Options were a bigger media center screen, upgraded alpine speaker package, tow package, and limited slip diff. I negotiated a hardtop to accompany the factory soft top, and a spray in bedliner (though a tonneau cover would be on the short list for aftermarket purchases).

I love this truck! I never wanted a full size pickup - I dont do full size pickup things. Hauling isnt on my to do list very often, but a small trailer for the occasional oversize item isnt too far out of the ordinary. I do want to be able to purchase a good deal of mulch or gravel on demand, I want to be able to haul more than 5 rolls of insulation at a time, and the option to toss some bikes or camping gear and find my way to a light offroad camping/hiking spot is a real possibility. This truck covers all the boxes, plus fits in my garage.

The big issue is I only had my truck for about 5 days before they called me back and said they needed my truck due to a recall. Upon further investigation, just a few weeks before I signed on the dotted line, Stellantis/FCA/Mopar/Jeep/whatevertheirfkngnameis issued a recall with the NHTSA on nearly 80k Wranglers and Gladiators equipped with a manual transmission, going back to 2018. There have been multiple reports of overheated clutch pressure plates exploding under centrifugal force, and igniting fuel lines and other combustibles under the hood. There are news stories of trucks literally burning to the ground with no notice, at highway speeds, in traffic. According the NHTSA: "The clutch pressure plate may become overheated through friction, which may lead the pressure plate to rapidly fracture. When a pressure plate fractures, it may result in cracks or holes in the transmission case, allowing heated debris to be expelled from the transmission case. Heated debris expelled from the transmission bellhousing may come in contact with an ignition source in the vehicle or surrounding area, potentially leading to a fire. A fire can result in increased risk of occupant injury and injury to persons outside the vehicle." More info can be found in these NHTSA bulletins - recall doc one and recall doc 2

TL;DR, this issue has been on Jeep's radar for years, and there currently is no fix for a problem that turns their vehicles into murder bombs.

The dealer has been very accommodating since then - Ive been issued 2023 Gladiator Rubicons with 8spd autos as loaners. I used the plural tense there on purpose , as Im now on my third loaner. Every time I get over 4k miles on the thing, they swap it out. On the one hand, Im pretty happy to have a 2022 gladdy with only 280 miles on it. We havent put many miles on the missus vehicle either. I just put gas in her SUV last weekend for the first time since we bought the Gladiator. On the other hand, Ive been very hesitant to do any actual truck things with these loaners - I dont want to scratch the bed with gravel or risk the paint when leaving pavement.

And this is where Im getting aggravated. I like the loaner Rubicon's lifted stance and all, but aside from the cool looking lift and tires, theres not a whole lot that differentiates it from my Overland (ok, Rubicons do have a bit more than just a lifted stance, but given im not taking it offroad, none of the differences are doing anything for me). I want to do truck stuff in my truck that I bought because I needed a truck and this truck I bought would do the truck stuff that I needed a truck to do. But since I dont have my truck, I cant do the truck stuff that I bought a truck to do.

The dealership I think is as frustrated as I am - for one, i told them that My truck would live inside my garage. When they couldnt give me an ETA on the recall completion, I explained that I expect my truck to live indoors there too. They agreed and its literally in their showroom, where the sales manager has to look at it every day. Also, I did some research, and technically, they could be on the hook for a $21k fine to Uncle Sam- there are federal laws that prohibit a dealer from delivering a vehicle to a purchaser while its under uncompleted recalls. I believe this is why theyve been providing me with a loaner all summer as I put miles on their brand new trucks (like, only 27 total miles new)- this has to be killing them.

And Jeep Inc isnt helping the dealers - the dealership managers (both sales and service) Ive been dealing with are telling me their corporate rep isnt giving them any updates of substance. Back in July, the word they were getting was the correction would be published "in the 3rd quarter" of 2023. Well, now theyre saying the UAW strike (which didnt begin until the end of September) is delaying the correction. What I cant understand is, if its just excessive friction, either a revised clutch assembly or some adjustment should make the problem go away. What am I missing? I asked if they couldnt just put their Mopar upgraded clutch in and call it a day, but supposedly Mopar isnt accepting that as a correction and wont provide the hardware or authorize the dealers to do the install (putting me on the hook for the costs and still not correcting the recall). Ive heard that owners who arent as fortunate as I am to have a loaner are isntalling upgrades like ACT or Centerforce units, but theres no guarantee that theyre not going to be subject to the same issue.

So what do I do? I really want that truck. I love that truck. My dream truck. But im getting pretty tired of this dance. Should I shut up and be grateful for this level of accomodation? Should I contact a lawyer and pursue lemon law options to get out from under this truck? I mean, outside of poorer fuel economy, im not losing anything financially yet - im putting zero miles on my truck. But if things go on too long, am I going to just end up with a lemon anyway, and will have lost out on a whole summer of home improvement? Im very conflicted. What says the hive?

I say use the loaner as you would use yours, it's not your problem if it gets scratched.  I would ask them to give me a loaner with a bedliner though.

I'd also not call it a "Gladdy" but that's me.

The dealership actually suggested the same, but I just cant get behind the idea of returning the loaner all banged up. Financial responsibility or not, it just doesnt feel right.

I may have no choice however - I need some gravel to fill a trench I dug the first couple of days I had my truck. Its been an open line with just weed control fabric covering the dirt all summer. The better half may burry me in it if I dont fill it in soon.

What I cant understand is why its taking so long...I get that the lawyers always take their sweet time covering asses and whatnot, but if the pressure plate is slipping causing heat, wouldnt stiffer springs fix it? This feels like a simple enough correction on paper . I thought we had this figured out...clutches have been transmitting torque for over a century. What am I missing?

It sounds to me like a case of people driving the vehicle with a slipping clutch to the point it explodes. I'd probably just drive it and tell them to call me with they have a fix.

If you are super worried about it causing damage you could always do something like this.

STROUD TRANSMISSION BLANKET – Haisley Machine

I'm not engineer, but there's quite a few around here. I could forsee a stiffer pressure plate causing higher pedal effort, which would have to be evaluated as to whether it's acceptable or not. Somewhere there's people at Jeep who fuss over stuff like acceptable pedal efforts and stresses on firewall from clutch master cylinders and all of that.

Interesting conundrum.  I think if it were me, I'd continue piling miles on free vehicles and use them as my own.

I could conceive of a scenario where there could be a need for an adjustment to the pedal length or the cylinder or something - adjust the leverage to compensate for the increased spring tension. Wondering if the move to a V block from a straight 6 might have changed spacial allowances in the engine bay which necessitate the current pedal design...

Still, Mopar, ACT and Centerforce all sell units with increased clamping for towing/rock crawling - I cant imagine that these clutches mean a significant decrease in driveability via pedal-effort

Is it a sign of mental illness that "just drive the murder bomb" seems totally normal? Or is that just normal around here laugh

It's probably only a murder bomb when idiots are behind the wheel. 99% of the people on here would recognize a slipping clutch. 99% of the rest of the world can't manage to put down their cell phones.

Drive the loaner(s) and do truck things with them. It's not your problem that they can't fix your truck, they have provided you another one to use and to do Truck Stuff with while they wait on parts. I would want my own vehicle back as well – have you engaged Mopar's corporate-level customer care department? Call them, open a case, and then start calling them back often to get status updates. No one cares about you more than you do.

I used a loaner Ford F-150 to tow my race trailer several thousand miles over a few months while Ford was scratching their heads about a TSB for my personal 2018 F-150. Dealer knew, didn't care. They put me in a comparable vehicle and I used it as I would use my own, taking care of it as I would my own. NBD.

I did open a case with Mopar support, and their entire strategy was literally calling the same dealership I'm currently working with to get updates. They were functionally useless. I called frequently, and never got a single piece of useful information from them that the dealership hadn't already told me.

But given the consensus from the hive to drive it like I bought it, I will be picking up said gravel this weekend.

Truck things incoming!!!

Fun thing with the "loaners" and being under 5k miles is that they will then be sold as "new" but having been a "demo"/demonstrator.   I wouldnt buy a demo. The first few thousand miles being "borrowed mule" usage.

Very glad I read about this issue before buying my Gladiator. I keep throwing away those damn recall letters. My ACT Clutch is being installed today.

Who thought a 5000lbs truck needed a lightweight flywheel and a twin disk clutch?! This thing has a much lighter clutch feel than my XJ and my E36M3. I'm actually excited to get a stiffer clutch in it.

We bought a GMC that the dealer used to run from Cincinnati to Chicago a few times to transfer parts in order to hit the 6k miles they needed to hit in order to sell with the Demo discount. Zero problems, and came with a free pair of sunglasses the driver left in the console.

im going to pressure the dealer again to see if Jeep has relented on their block of the "Aftermarket clutch recall fix" option. Part of the official Jeep recall site has a section (probably just boilerplate language) talking to reimbursements for fix costs the buyer incurred on their own "If you have already incurred recall-related costs on the repair of your vehicle, you may qualify for reimbursement. Please begin the recall reimbursement process, which is handled on a case-by-case basis." If I can get an aftermarket clutch and have it covered under the recall, that would be a big win in my book...

Just wanted to come back to this after putting some miles on my new clutch.

I bought the ACT kit with the street clutch and extra heavy flywheel. So worth it. Slightly heavier clutch feel, but in a good way. Much more positive feedback on the pedal and more consistent engagement. The heavier flywheel really makes reverse feel a lot better and parking lots in 1st gear. Now I'll put my info into the reimbursement request and see if I can get a bit back.

Yes please do...curious about reimbursement.  Dealership called Mopar thus week and got another "no" about their clutches being used to satisfy the recall.

My wife's 21 Gladiator is 3.6l/manual. I find the clutch feel to be nonexistent, and the throttle mapping is atrocious.

I'm hoping whatever the fix is it helps with that.

And, no, no aftermarket items shall be installed. She demands it be bone stock.

Hope you guys manage to get reimbursement for the aftermarket fix.

I went through the same BS with a recall on my Ram 3500, which had a recall for drag links that weren't properly threaded and the tie rod end would pull off.  Their warranty 'fix' was to weld the tie rod ends, eliminating the ability to adjust toe and/or center the wheel on alignments.  No replacement part was available for almost two years.  They finally updated the part on new trucks, but refused to use the new part as a warranty fix unless yours actually failed.  It took about another year before dealers would sell the updated part to an individual, but I bought one and installed it myself and had the truck aligned.  The dealer refused to clear the warranty because they didn't do the work... and they also refused to reimburse for the fix.   Still shows an open recall... angry

Just found this PDF, a variant from the one I found in the spring

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2023/RCLRPT-23V116-9985.PDF?mibextid=S66gvF

It had a table for the proposed schedule of repairs. It shiws '23 models are slated for repairs starting 11/30 (pushed back from an August update that had 23 models being repaired beginning 9/19).  My year, '22, has a tentative date of August 2024?!?!?

I'll be contacting the dealer to see if they have anything to add to that, but thus far they've not been able to tell me anything I didn't already know. It's been more common that I've been giving the dealer more info than they're getting from their Stellantis rep. I still need to reopen my ticket with Mopar customer service...

Ut now I'm also going to call NHTSA and lodge a complaint.  That timeline is completely unacceptable given that it seems Jeep is not reimbursing owners who went to the aftermarket. The dealer is bending over backwards for me, but it's probably because they're guilty of selling me a recalled car, not that they're that interested in my satisfaction. Jeep on the other hand seems to not give 2 squirts of warm piss about this issue.

I would just relax and enjoy the loaners. I had a warranty issue with the transmission on an excavator I bought, and they had it for a year while they argued about whether or not to replace a torque converter. I put almost a thousand hours on their loaner and was darn happy to do it. I beat it like a rented mule and had no concern over wear and tear. It allowed me a full extra year on my own machine which did eventually get a torque converter.
