The Subaru B9 Tribeca gets a facelift for the 2008 model year, replacing the airplane-inspired front end styling with something a bit more palatable and "SUV-like," according to Subaru. We're not sure about SUV-like, but the look is definitely less polarizing.
Under the hood, a new 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of torque. It's backed by a five-speed automatic transmission. Being a Subaru, of course the engine is horizontally opposed, and the power is delivered to all four wheels.
Inside, the 2008 Tribueca sees few changes, limited mostly to a new--and optional--third row, allowing for seven-passenger seating. Our test Tribeca was not equipped with that option.
Prices start at $30,640 with destination charges for a basic five-passenger version. Prices for the seven-passenger versions start at $31,640. Our test machine, which featured the optional navigation system, listed for $35,640.
The Tribeca is a nice, comfortable vehicle. Subaru has upped their game in the past few years. It's now Honda or Toyota quality. It's truly comfortable, and the ergonomics are good.
We didn't go off-roading, but in snow and slippery conditions it was flawless. Plus we could carry four people plus luggage well.
It's not a mileage champion, though.
I'm going to echo what Tim said. (Wow, notify the paper--we agree!) The Tribeca was very comfortable as a driver or passenger, easy to park and had a nice Honda-like interior. The fuel economy isn't wonderful, but I'm still a fan of Subaru's all-wheel drive.
