I think I would take a ford econoline over this car, I guess I don't get it.
Better than: Ford Econoline
But not as good as: MINI Cooper
GRM Bang For The Buck Index: 71.01
We've seen the Nissan Cube in other lands, and it has finally arrived here for 2009. As it appears, it's basically a rolling box--a conveyance for hauling friends, bikes and stuff.
The Cube does get its share of funkiness, though, including optional equipment like the Shag Dash Topper--we're still not sure what it does--and door handle bungies should you feel the need to lash something to the door panel.
Those options do add up, however, as they raised our car's price from $16,790 to $22,780. At $2550, the Ginormous package added most of the bling: aero kit, 20-color interior accent lights, custom grille and some other shiny bits. The base car starts at $13,990.
We give Nissan props for not equipping the Cube with a wheezer of an engine, a fault that removed some shine from the original xB. Even with the automatic transmission, the Cube's 1.8 was plenty quick enough for us--and our wacky stuff.
I've seen many Cubes while visiting Japan and always admired them. There's just something cool about having asymmetric windows. No, the Cube won't out-handle a MINI, but it's a practical mover--possibly a perfect car for college. It's also quick enough for normal use.
Also like the MINI, the Cube allows a bit of personalization at the dealership level. No, those options don't come cheap, but for the average buyer it's a quick, easy way to have something that's unique.
