2016 Mazda CX-9 Signature new car reviews

Our friends at Mazda have been touting their all-new CX-9 for a while. Just wait until we see it, they said. Well, we have now seen—and driven—their latest three-row SUV.

Of everything we have driven lately, this one surprised me the most. Yes, you expect an MX-5 to be sporty and a Camaro to be Camaro-y, but the new CX-9 exceeded my every expectation. I know, hold on while I turn over my GRM editor card.

No, seriously, inside, it’s just so pleasant—and not that fake, tacked-on niceness. The wood and leather have just that right feel—not cheap and not over-the-top. The seats offer just the right support. The switches click with a solid click. Click.

I didn’t get to drive the CX-9 while fully loaded, but the turbo engine seemed plenty powerful. The transmission shifted smoothly. Not one issue with ride, handling or comfort. Yes, I could easily drive this one from coast to coast.

The price: Our loaded CX-9 stickered somewhere north of $44k. The Sport model starts at $31,520. I'd call that a value in today's big SUV field.

The big question: the nose. It’s definitely a Mazda and not a Honda or a Lexus or a Kia. If you love that nose and need an SUV big enough for a ska band, then the CX-9 is for you.

This trim level is available only in pearl white or machine gray metallic. Less expensive trims have more color choices including soul red and deep blue. What is Mazda thinking?
