The current Mazda 6 isn’t totally new to our world, but what an upgrade over the previous model. The current 6 looks great, has a ton of space, and comes fairly priced.
For 2016 it received a facelift, with the highlights including a new nose, electronic parking brake and LED headlights on Touring and Grand Touring models. The interior receives a new dashboard, armrest and center console. Cars fitted with an automatic transmission receive a Sport mode.
Our test car was the rather loaded Grand Touring. It gets leather-trimmed seats, power moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, LED fog lights and some extra comforts. For 2016 the Mazda 6 Grand Touring gets an LED grille—yes, when illuminated the lower half of the grille twinkles—plus
I’ll keep this brief: This may well be the best new sedan available for the price. For real, especially if you look at Sport and Touring models.
A manual shift Sport starts at $21,495. The Touring starts at $23,945 when purchased with a stick. (Add $1500 for an automatic on the Touring and $1050 for an automatic on the Sport.)
No matter which 6 you pick, you get the same 184-horsepower, 2.5-liter in-line four. You also get the same giant trunk. And the really comfortable back seat. So for $21,495 you can get yourself plenty of room, oomph and style.
Earlier this year I flew up to New York for the auto show. Mazda was hosting the MX-5 RF reveal that evening, so to facilitate my attendance they sent a driver for me—an off-duty NYPD detective driving a new Mazda 6. He picked me up at JFK and sprinted me to the West Side.
It was the perfect car for the trip—and the perfect driver. I had a ton of room back there. And despite New York’s finest roads, the Mazda6 delivered a comfortable, quiet ride.
The officer couldn’t stop raving about the car itself. In fact, when we parted for the evening, he mentioned that he’d be taking a closer look at the Mazda 6. It’s the perfect family car, he reasoned.
We bought a brand new '16 6 GT last year for my wife. She loves it. Dark blue metallic with off-white leather. We love it. Handles great and the little touches like the lighted grille, LEDs and metallic interior trim make it feel more expensive than it is. My wife calls it her luxury car on an economy car budget. The only thing I could wish for is the 2.5 turbo from the new CX-9 as an option.
