2017 Lexus GS F new car reviews

Okay, we know the first question many of you are going to ask: Does it come with a stick shift? No, the Lexus GS-F only comes with one transmission, an eight-speed automatic. Here’s the good news: It’s a really, really smooth transmission that perfectly suits the car’s demeanor—and its 467-horsepower, 5.0-liter V8 engine.

The GS-F first arrived for 2016, so our 2017 test car is basically a carryover. And that’s okay with us. Super-smooth V8. Comfy, Lexus-like interior. A sporty chassis that doesn’t kick you in the kidneys.

Lexus likes to note that it has a track-tuned suspension, pointing out the Brembo brakes. Is this something that you’d really take on track? Probably not—but you could.

I have been a fan of these GS sedans for ages. They’re comfy, quick and composed. For a street daily, they’re perfect. They work fine on town and can also easily gobble up the miles.

The GS F just adds more to love. The high-winding V8 is intoxicating. I love the seats, steering wheel and interior appointments. (Yeah, I realize that some of that exhaust note is boosted through the audio system. Know what? It sounds pretty good.)

Despite the chops, this wouldn't be my first choice for a track car. That’s still what Miatas and M3s are for.

The big question: This or a BMW? Tough call. Each has its own flavor. How’s this for a semi-copout answer: Before you sign on the line for that big BMW or Audi, check out the Lexus?

If I could afford it, yeah, I’d have one in the fleet.
