The Explorer has served as the quintessential mid-sized SUV for years. Our test car came with the Platinum Package, meaning a two-panel moon roof, heated and cooled seats and all the safety features possible. It also came with the EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 engine making about 365 horsepower.
I guess for most people this is the benchmark for an SUV. From the outside, I dig the looks. It has a purposeful yet graceful shape. Seriously, for an SUV, it looks pretty good.
Inside it’s nicely appointed, and the turbo engine makes plenty of power. The entire drivetrain, in fact, gets a gold star.
My big gripe: It’s fairly boomy inside. Also, something in the back of our tester was squeaking. Maybe it was a seat, maybe it was something else. Squeaks can be fixed, but the boominess got a little tiring on the freeway.
