2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI S new car reviews

Do you really like the Golf GTI, but also really like trunks? VW has just the car for you: The Jetta GLI.

What do you get? Besides the trunk, you get the same 228-horsepower engine, the same choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG, and even the same MQB platform underpinnings.

Be careful what you wish for. How’s that?

The Jetta GLI feels sporty, yes, but some might consider the ride to be quite stiff.

But that’s good, right?

Depends.

Going to the track? Sure.

Long drive with the family? Maybe a touch too stiff? You know what, yeah, it does feel too stiff.

The rest of the car feels great. VW still nails the twin-clutch gearboxes, and the interior has that distinctive business-like feel. Switches have a unique click to them. You won’t confuse this with something from Asia or the U.S.

And then there’s the trunk: Somehow it defies physics and just offers all the space in the world. Maybe there’s a wormhole behind the rear seats, I don’t know, but it swallowed a ton of our stuff.

So, back to this stiff ride. This is GRM, and we’re supposed to love that stuff, right? We do. But we’re just offering a friendly warning: Before signing on the bottom line, make sure the rest of your crew is up for the SCCA-inspired suspension tuning. If they are, this could make for a very good matchup.
