The 2023 edition of the $2000 Challenge presented by Tire Rack is closing in faster than a Subaru 360 turned into an LMP-style racer. What are your plans to participate?

Our annual $2000 Challenge is an automotive festival celebrating autocross, drag racing and ingenuity where we ask one simple question: How fast can you go for less than $2000?

For 2022, we opened the competition to cars built for more than $2000 to find out if more money really does equal more speed–an expansion we’re eager to continue for 2023 once again at Florida’s Gainesville Raceway.

The Best Western Gateway Grand will once again act as the host hotel for the weekend’s festivities.

We also have exciting plans in the works for 2023, starting with an all-new date: Memorial Day weekend, May 27-28, 2023.

Stay tuned for more updates here and on the $2000 Challenge website.

Will the individual events be "a la carte" again?  Classing by tires again like this year?

I've only attended once, and then as a spectator (It was great fun!)  I liked the fall date for a number of reasons. Not least of which it's not FL in the summer.

I think Memorial Weekend will be a hard sell. So much is going on that weekend!

Best of luck. I hope it succeeds spectacularly.

Just curious. Why the change of date?

Hurricanes and narrowly avoiding them was the primary reason given.

Yes, hurricanes were the primary concern--if you noticed, this year's event had major hurricanes just weeks before AND after it, and we're tired of planning on dodging those bullets.

A switch to May will also bring warmer evenings, which should mean a safer surface for drag racing.

I would also think it's easier to not have to work around football games when scheduling the track.
