Just how powerful is the 2023 Civic Type R, “the most powerful Honda production vehicle ever sold in the U.S.?” Well, now we know: 315 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 2600-4000 rpm. (An improvement of 9 horsepower and 15 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the outgoing Type R.)
All that power is made possible by taking the “award-winning” K20C, and giving it a redesigned turbo, increasing the engine’s air intake flow rate and tacking on a new exhaust that features both a straight-through design and an active valve that opens at higher rpm “to heighten and enhance the sound of the engine.”
The transmission also gets an upgrade, with Honda using a lighter flywheel, a revised rev-matching system and a beefier six-speed gearbox:
The high-strength gearbox has also gained a high-rigidity lever and optimized shift gate pattern for a reassured and hyper-precise gear change.
A helical-type limited-slip differential comes standard. Drivers have the option of switching between four preset driving settings–Comfort, Sport, R+ Mode and Individual Mode. All-new for 2023, the Individual Mode allows individual customization for the engine, steering, suspension and engine sound.
Although based on the Civic Hatchback, the Type R features an extended wheelbase–increased by 1.4 inches–plus a wider front and rear track–increased by 1 inch and 0.75 inches, respectively.
Featuring all-new body panels “forward of the A-pillars,” the Type R sits 0.8 inches longer, 0.5 inches lower and 0.6 inches wider than the more pedestrian Civic Hatchback. The hood, now made of aluminum, features functional vents.
What colors can you get those body panels painted? You get your choice of Championship White, Rallye Red, Boost Blue, Crystal Black Pearl or Sonic Grey Pearl.
In the handling department, there’s 19-inch matte black alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires that, according to Honda, are 20mm wider than the tires on the outgoing model.
Inside, drivers will be greeted by that signature red interior, though they will be sitting lower thanks to new, lighter seats. Honda says you’ll even have greater visibility, courtesy of thinner pillars, a relocated side mirror, and a lower hood.
“Is the dash display new for 2023?” Why yes, yes it is:
To better support performance driving, Type R's exclusive new digital meter display features clean, easy-to-read graphics and an extensive selection of displays. The design features a large tachometer and gear-position display, plus a multi-information display.
A second new meter design is exclusive to Type R's +R mode and allows the driver to obtain necessary information instantly, with the engine rpm, and gear position placed at the top. A racing-inspired illuminated rev indicator located above the gauge cluster gives the driver a quick indication of engine rpm during performance driving.
As far as tech, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging and even a “custom-engineered” Bose sound system all come standard. Honda’s LogR data logger–capable of recording lap times and a tire friction circle–has also been updated, no longer requiring a smartphone app to function and share data.
Expect to see more details and pricing information closer to the Type R’s launch later this fall.

I figured it would be higher, like 340.
I always wondered...
Wouldn't a measurement like, "total HP under the curve" more useful?
Or is it just easier to express the whole thing as a number, even if that number only occurs at the top of a giant peak at 7k rpm?

Looks great. So much better than the previous gen. If I needed a dad mobile, this would likely be at the top of the list.
I grew to like the previous CTR - especially in darker colors - but this one looks so much better. Unfortunately, I'm grasping at straws looking for any justification to buy a car this expensive that I will rarely drive.
That's fascinating that the wheelbase is longer than the standard civic. That kind of implies to me that the chassis itself is different, as opposed to just what they bolt onto it.
I didn't realize they differentiated the Type R that much.

They did the same thing with the old ITR. Windshield was specc'd thinner for weight savings, etc

Exactly. This is the same as how advertizers learned long ago that saying "you can make UPTO $10K a week", that people fixate on that number and internalize it as truth.
