The best of both worlds? The Street Car Shootout, SCCA’s newest program, combines the challenge of autocross with the thrill of time attack.

Slated for February 15-16 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the SCCA Street Car Shootout starts with competitors running four autocross runs on a giant lot located east of Las Vegas Motor Speedway–the same pad that hosted the 2024 Las Vegas ProSolo events.

Later that afternoon, participants will run the course four more times, but in reverse.

The Street Car Shootout then heads to the road course on Sunday, with competitors running at least four time attack sessions (including one practice session).

Winners will be decided using the top times from each of the three sessions. (Saturday morning autocross, Saturday afternoon autocross and Sunday time attack.)

As for what cars can compete, SCCA offers the following info:

The Street Car Shootout is intended for street cars on 200 treadwear tires, meaning if you’ve been autocrossing or running SCCA Time Trials competition, you likely already have the right rubber for this event.

To keep classing simple, this event will use the existing Max and Tuner category classes found in SCCA Time Trials competition, plus Club Spec rules. As a cheat sheet for autocrossers, Street Touring cars are eligible for Tuner, while cars beyond that, like CAM, Xtreme Street, etc., fit into the Max category.

Personally, I love this best of both worlds concept. It'll make things interesting.

Interesting, though this- "Top times from each of the three competition elements will then be added to decide the winners." probably means the time attack is going to be more important than autocross. IME there tends to be more separation in TT. If I were running it, I'd throw in a 'must use the same time the whole weekend' in there.

It says there are two autox times included though, one forwards and one backwards.

But yeah, to balance them properly you'd need to normalize the times.

Probably the easiest way is to change it to a % of fastest time for each class rather than raw time. Or just do a points system for finish place like imsa, etc. Then the gaps don't really matter, just the order. You'd probably want to average the autox runs to maintain the balance between events with something like that.

isn't this what Optima does for their ultimate street car challenge?  I think they also add a few other components but the idea applies

It's not specifically mentioned but since it appears to be sanctioned as a TT event, I would assume the tire requirement still applies.

The other way to look at this is...you trade off all your Saturday TT laps for a handful of autocross runs.

Uh...no thanks.
