Do you have the guts to drill into a Ferrari engine? | The latest from FrakenFerrari, the V12-powered Ferrari 308

What’s a FrankenFerrari? It’s forum user mke’s V12-powered Ferrari 308 project that features all the custom machine work. At the time of writing, the thread has reached 90 pages.

As you might expect, fitting a V12 in an engine bay meant for a V8 comes with its own unique set of challenges, on top of the adding complexity/stress of working on a Ferrari.

The latest hurdle? After pulling the engine and methodically taking it apart, mke discovered coolant had seeped into some of the cylinders.

The solution? You'll have to find out by reading the build thread yourself. Find it here: FrankenFerrari - V12 Ferrari 308.

I've welded on one, does that count?  Any extra points for fire hazard (versus say, an aluminum splinter)?

This Ferrari is just screaming for a decent motor! Say a turbo charged Mazda 20B three  rotor from Pettit Racing! Less that half the weight of the V12 and room to add a trunk!

I've never seen one Mazda swapped but there are a couple honda swapped examples.

A guy I know builds 1000hp k24 engines and proudly says they are good 100 passes....hmmmm 100 passes times 10 seconds is 1000 seconds or about 17 minutes of run time.  100 passes might be a season on the strip but it would be lucky to live 1 race on a road course assuming you skip all the practice sessions so its still running come race time.

This primarily a street car that will hopefully see a couple autocrosses each year so neither example above applies really but it does want a wide usable power curve making turbo options a challenge.  I had a supercharged 3.0 V8 for several years which was very fast but just didn't sound or feel quite as nice as the original NA engine....hopefully this larger and higher reving NA engine will strike a good balance.  I think its a bit lighter than the  V8 with blower and carries the weight a bit lower and a bit further forward so handling should be marginally improved as well.

A 308 (and 328) does have trunks in both the front and rear btw wink

1000hp should be running 8's so you can add a little bit on to that number. Likely they can go more, but once the season is over they tear down anyway. 4piston is doing a lot with the newer turbo K's would be intersting to see what a streetable, but mean, one of those would do.

If its 8s then 800 seconds or  just 13 minutes wink

When I first started roadracing an H-D XR (their dirttrack engine) my buddy's shop gave me a lot of help.  He had a few drag bikes running out of the shop with a couple national champs....the first engine we build didn't survive 1 weekend.  The next lasted 2...he couldn't believe it and came to the track with me to see exactly wft I has doing to the engines.  Racing.  2 was all I ever got from transmissions even though we got the engines to live 4 usually as long as I short shifted most of the time, that was the key to life.  Drag racing and road racing are just very different games

My understanding is the roadcourse versions are 300-500 but street they push a bit higher, like 500-600 and 1000hp is a dyno queen.  But that is all 2nd hand so for sure could be bs.

Mazda 20B is reported to have run at the Rolex 24 at Daytona from 2008 through 2013. During the entire series there was NOT one engine failure with any of the teams! Put that in your pipe and smoke it. Dahm Racing is building engines with 800 HP and they are durable.

As I said, I've not seen one in a 308, only honda engines for whatever reason.  The mazda rotaries  are fine engines and I look forward to seeing your build!

But then you'd have a rotary,  where it doesn't belong.

Plus, if you had a rotary  everyone for thirty miles around would hate you.

And, since 308s have some fiberglass and aluminum in them, it would likely melt from the waste heat.

The owner of this car is on another plane of existence. One that simply does not countenance anything other than a V12 in a Ferrari. One that recognizes the existence of an easy button, but refuses to push it. Srsly... if anyone hasn't read the build thread, go get a tall glass, set aside some time, and start at pg 1. It could verywell be the greatest build thread on the internet.

Yes very true. We have our street cars that can do 600-700 for quite awhile but the 1000-1200whp builds probably wouldn't last more than a few hundred miles.
