The GRM family goes way, way back with Randy Pobst, with his Volkswagen Golf appearing on one of our first covers–the July 1985 issue. We’ve collaborated on much editorial in the decades since, from tire tests to driving tips.

Look for more from Randy Pobst on the pages of GRM this year.

Randy knows our world inside and out.

He started autocrossing in 1977, winning his first national SCCA title in 1983–in a 1977 Volkswagen Rabbit. He quickly added two more national titles to that tally plus four SCCA ProSolo and two Solo I championships. Some of those big wins came in a GRM-entered, factory-backed Toyota FX-16 effort.

In 2018, after a few decades away from top-tier autocross, Randy returned to the Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals driving Geoffrey Zimmer’s popular 1977 Volkswagen Rabbit. After two days of competition, Randy’s name stood atop the sheets for his third SCCA national championship.

Randy has also seen much success in road racing, winning two SCCA national Club Racing titles before expanding to the pro ranks, where he claimed SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge GT championships plus two wins at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. He was also a North American Touring Car Championship winner.

The thing I am most proud of,” he says, “are my factory racing contracts, with Porsche, Audi, Mazda and Volvo.”

In recent years, Randy has been a regular sight at low-buck endurance events, often behind the wheel of his red Volvo 740.

As they say, we’re looking forward to getting the band back together.

For real. I don't think there's anything Randy can't drive well.

I'm looking forward to seeing more rad stuff from him.

I know I'm one of the few people that actually read it, but I just read his farewell column in the last (I guess it's going to be LAST last) issue of Sports Car.

I guess this answers the question of "what he was going to do next".

I'm also one of the few that read his last column in Sports Car.  Looking forward to his future contributions.  Glad my last post about Randy didn't do him any harm!

And a little something from the archives, and very much looking to do more with Randy. I want to say that we met at an autocross–either a Divisional or National Tour–in 1992.

Oh, and why no GRM stickers on the above photo? Because back then we were still called Auto-X magazine.

Who can name all the people in that shot?

Randy's column in Sports Car from a coupla years back decrying the "Rubbin' is Racin'" attitude when Logano essentially crashed someone, I don't remember who, out to win the Nascar Champeenship. It should be required reading for anybody taking part in wheel to wheel motorsports.
