I have been lucky to see them run and, yes, they totally sound like two-stroke dirt bikes.
No, this isn’t just any Lancia 037, it is the very first of its kind—the prototype for the iconic rally machine—and it’s for sale.
The 037 became the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship. It's powered by a supercharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that made anywhere from 265 horsepower to 325 horsepower in later “Evolution” trims. Of course, none of that would have been possible without this very prototype.
Built by Dallara with oversight from Abarth, the 037 Prototype would be tested by drivers like Markku Alen, Adartico Vudafieri and Giorgio Pianta. Later in its life, the prototype served as a Recce car, though would eventually spend time in the private ownership of Sergio Limone, who restored the Lancia to its present condition.
So, how much does it cost? We don’t know yet—though it’s estimated to fetch close to a million dollars–as the Lancia will headline RM Sotheby’s upcoming exclusive Milan auction on June 15. And, before you decide which limb to sell, the auction isn’t open to everyone, as bidding is available “to a limited number of bidders by appointment only”.
Not to fret, however, as the entire sale will believe streamed from RM Sotheby’s Milan, located at the Palazzo Serbelloni.
How much do you think the final sale price for the Lancia 037 Prototype will be?

I wonder how much of that is the "muffler".
Makela Auto Tuning made them for the series of Ferrari 308 rally cars they restored/built, and it looks very similar to the ones on the Lancia 037 ("Lancia Rally"). It's just a gentle expanding taper, ended by a very severe taper.

Maybe? Somewhere I have phone video as I got to stand behind one at the starting line at the Goodwood rally. (I keep earplugs on my keychain.) But it's all the two-stroke pops. Very rad.
With about 200 miles behind the wheel of the car in the photo below, the sound from the driver's seat is mostly supercharger whine. Also ,while fairly loud exhaust, the car in question is a "Stradale" which must have milder cams than the competition cars, it was quite docile in traffic. Only did 2 stroke pops with extreme deceleration. Note exhaust tips as described above.
