That looks like 2000 Challenge car
In case the massive wings and gargantuan turbocharger didn’t give it away, Dallas Reed’s 2004 Mazda RX-8 is far from stock.
Powering the car is a stroked and ported LS3 V8 fitted with a forged crank, rods and pistons. What’s it all good for? Well, even Dallas isn’t quite sure. Horsepower is listed as “Have not yet dyno'd, probably will run this event at 900-1200 whp,” with torque noted to be somewhere in the range of “a lot.”
Think you need a fancy aerodynamic package to keep all that power planted? Dallas opted for a garage-built setup comprised entirely of aluminum sheet metal.
The most notable part of this build, though, might be the challenge Dallas has to overcome to get the car ready for this year’s Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge Presented by Grassroots Motorsports. After a brake failure resulted in wrecking his car at the end of last season, he transferred just about every salvageable component from his old ride to a new chassis. The plan is to dial in the car over the course of this year to prepare it for the UTCC.
What is the Ultimate Track Car Challenge? It’s our annual no-holds-barred track competition that simply seeks the fastest machines on four wheels. The rules are brief: Car and driver must just pass a safety inspection. Period.
Pretty much everyone is welcome: New, old, factory-bought and home-built. Wings are cool. So are box flares, giant intercoolers and sequential shifters.
