Safey represents a key role in the continuation of motorsports.
Fitting, then, that the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is opening a new exhibit showcasing how safety has evolved in the sport, highlighting the very first HANS device. The opening also coincides with the 20th anniversary the HANS device was mandated in both NASCAR and IndyCar.
The device was around well before the it was mandated, however; Jim Downing wore the first prototype in 1986 at the three-hour IMSA finale at Daytona International Speedway.
