We’re at the unveiling of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and we can finally see it!

Here are Editoral Director David’s notes from the talk that followed the public component of the MX-5 design unveil:

Car is a tad bit wider than the NC.

Nose is lower than the NC

Meets ped impact standards

Lower and more intense mouth—idea to create a more confident look.

Full LED headlights

Tried to keep car taught

Black windshield header is standard

Hip line beneath door handle creates tension

Reinterpretation of original rear taillight.

Upscale interior materials yet the design recalls original.

220 lbs lighter than NC

Rear end looks like a F-type to me. IMHO, that is a good thing.

Looks like a S2000 and a Z4 had a love child. Can't wait to see it in person

Yep. This might be one of the cars that has lines that just don't look nearly as good in photos as they do in person.

Rear end is great, especially the haunches. The choice to put the headlights so low is interesting. It gives it a sleeker, more wedge-like appearance - which is welcome departure from the current blunt-face-huge-grill designs that seem the norm these days. Still, the low headlights give it an odd proportion to my eyes at the moment. Either way, it's a lot more interesting to look at than the NC. Also looking forward to seeing it in person.

I like it. I see a callback to MiniLite-type wheels from some angles. Is the screen in the center console removable? BMW did the same kind of thing, made it look more like an aftermarket add-on than integrated into the design, but overall, I really like it. Clean exterior lines but still some sharpness, fairly simple interior by modern standards.

Oh yeah, and 220 lbs lighter than the NC! Any figures on HP/engine yet?

I owned an 89 Miata with a factory installed hardtop. I have a couple years before I buy a new car. The FRS/BRZ are at the top now but this just might take my money if the performance, as in fun to drive not 1/4 mile times, hasn't been lost.
