Rate It: The Kia Provo Concept Was a Mini-Sized Hybrid Hot Hatch

Those looking for a subcompact-sized hot hatch from the likes of Kia would likely be disappointed (not to mention that the hatchback version of the Rio has been discontinued), but the Korean company’s European branch wanted to change that image with its Provo concept.

Revealed at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the Rio-based Kia Provo was powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that could put down 201 horsepower to all four wheels through a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission—a first for Kia at the time—although an extra 44 horsepower was on tap thanks to an electric motor attached to the rear axle.

Style-wise, the Provo was said to mix “ultra-modern technology with a self-confident and agile look to deliver an exciting new b-segment car for enthusiasts.” Whether or not you agree with that, the exterior does offer some unique proportions and some smattering of orange accents. Inside, you’ll find plenty of quilted leather, shiny toggle switches and even some alcantara.

So even though this was more of a design study intended to “provoke” potential buyers over in Europe, does Kia need a hot hatch of its own, even if it’s nothing more than a rebadged Veloster?

Aside from my usual complaint about high belt lines on modern cars, I like that, but then I've always been a fan of small cars.

I think it's hideous, but I have unusual taste in cars.

Wasn't there some rumblings about KIA spinning off SOUL to be its own youth brand?  That will never happen but if it did.  I'd love to see KIA out do MINI at their own game.  This could be a great competitor to the MINI hardtop.  I'd like a MINI alternative that was reliable and actually had an interior that was nice, not a plastic novelty.

I like it, a different take on the MINI Coupe which I also liked although it wasn't popular.  What's the wheelbase and curb weight?
